About this deal

I'm comfortable with the physical nature of the 14-150, but I've never handled the 12-100 so I have no idea how ridiculous it will be to have round my neck/shoulder on a trip (I carry a neck injury, so an E-M5 with a standard prime is already taxing enough for my spine). Now the one big disconnect between my experience and your wish list is I have been carrying the 12-60 SWD or the 50-200mm around on camera bodies for years, so the size and weight isn't really one of my main concerns. The transition between elements is smooth, though you’ll get slightly creamier results and larger bokeh balls by opening the aperture to f/2.

When photographing, those kinds of things seldom get noticed, but that kind of zoom effect can be a real pain if it happens during filming. An extremely fast and high precision AF system allows you to capture still or moving subjects with the highest clarity and definition. The rubber on the hood is collapsible, and the 3-stage design makes it simple to choose the correct cover for your lens. It also ensures that you can create video recordings without extra tools, like a tripod or a Gimbal (see the video recordings made with Olympus OM-D EM-1 mk2) with such a small housing and so little weight. When used on a non-stabilised body such as the 4-year-old Panasonic Lumix GF5, for example, the optical stabilisation continues to impress. It acts as a thermal barrier in colder temperatures, shielding your hands from the icy lens surface.

If you want a bag that doesn't look like a camera bag or prefer to make your own DIY solutions, they're worth a look. Zuiko Digital ED 300mm f/4 IS Pro telephoto, Olympus had relied on in-body stabilisation systems – the 12-100mm is their second lens to have it.

The camera-lens combo is capable of locking focus on a subject almost instantly, even when alternating between close and faraway subjects. I have owned the Olympus 60mm macro lens since its introduction, but now hardly need it for flowers and food. Maybe take this with a grain of salt bc I didn’t do a proper test of the 14-150ii BUT I have one currently it appears to be the worst IQ m43 lens I’ve ever used.

Field review: The Olympus M.Zuiko 12-100mm F4 IS Pro goes to Oz

The whole lens is free of play, and the zoom and focus rings have exactly the right amount of resistance. seconds; with this one I’ve shot hand-held at speeds as long as 4 seconds and got perfectly usable results. This Micro Four Thirds lens features premium construction and superior glass to provide spectacular optical performance. By the maximum relative aperture the lens doesn’t have any problems with exceeding 60 lpmm distinctly (and at 25 mm it manages to exceed even 70 lpmm); on stopping down its performance even gets better. If time/weather permit me to stop for the perfect shot, I've got the kit – what I want is a weatherproof zoom that enables me to go from shooting my other half sat next to me in the car to getting a snap of that cool building I can see out of the window. At 25mm, on the other hand, the tables turn in favour of the 12-100mm, especially at its fastest aperture.

That pointed me at the 12-100, but that's a much bigger lens than I'd like to carry for some situations (I do a lot of cycle touring when I travel). Partially because of the cycle touring and partially because of where I travel, weather-sealing is a big deal, which is why I'm looking at these two lenses.

But the 14-150mm II will feel better on the E-M5 II - even though I handled the 12-100mm on that camera at Photokina and was pleasantly surprised about how well it balanced on that quite compact body; as a matter of fact, it felt somewhat less front-heavy than the 12-40mm!
