It was whilst living in London in 1978 that he first turned his hand to drag, developing the character of Lily Savage based upon various female relatives of his. And you’d nurse them as well, and you’d have to break the news to their families, that they’ve got Aids, and the stigma surrounding it at the time … ‘We’ll say he’s got cancer. Lily later became a regular on This Morning, took over the bed on The Big Breakfast and presented Blankety Blank. The book takes us on a roller coaster ride through a decade of Paul O’Grady’s life and is stuffed to the gunwales with hilarious stories, extreme situations and outrageous one-liners.

O’Grady delivered a hilarious eulogy at Cilla Black’s funeral in August, about how they used to go clubbing in New York together, to working-class Latino gay bars, where he would stick her jewellery in his pocket. From being involved in a plane crash, to getting caught up in the LA riots and a close encounter with Madonna, the stories come thick and fast. At the end of the author s previous volume of autobiography, Still Standing, his brilliant comic creation Lily Savage stood on the brink of fame. Could do with a bit more show not tell when he is recounting the hilarity of taking his dog Buster down a ladder in a carrier bag. It is his fourth autobiography, but it barely takes him up to 1997, so it is safe to assume there are a few more volumes in him yet.

Open the Cage, Murphy: Further Savage Adventures by Paul O

There are so many laugh out loud moments in the book tempered with some heartbreaking incidents but Paul is a master story teller. After decades on the London pub drag circuit, his Lily Savage character finally broke through in Edinburgh, which landed him a handful of TV jobs, including a year-long stint on 90s morning show The Big Breakfast. easy to read, flows along nicely and i would especially recommend these books for locals or in the case of this book love hearing paul name drop lots of rich and famous old top celebs. I laughed and cryed with this amazing account from Paul O'Grady as he rose to stardom as the great Lily Savage. At the end of Paul’s previous volume of autobiography, Still Standing, his brilliant comic creation Lily Savage stood on the brink of fame.

But whether he’s writing about star-studded Hollywood parties, the devastating loss of close friends to AIDS, or late night shenanigans at the end of Blackpool Pier, Paul’s wit and humanity never desert him. We are meeting in a fancy room in the central London headquarters of Olga TV, the production company he set up in 2005. Paul O'Grady first came to fame in the guise of Lily Savage, and was nominated for a Perrier Award at the Edinburgh Festival in 1991. Love Paul O Grady's candour and the horror of the HIV wards and the loss he suffers in trying to find closure.

Paul O’Grady: ‘I’ve lost just about everybody I know’

I found myself laughing out loud at some of the colourful antics Paul got up to in his days as lily savage and felt his pain as he lost friends to the AIDS virus. With typical razor-sharp wit and candour, Paul tells of his rise to fame as Lily Savage in the late 1980s and early 1990s, before he became a household name. Discover the joy of reading with us, your trusted source for affordable books that do not compromise on quality. The 4th volume of memoirs more than lives up to its predecessors, as Paul recounts the rise of Lily Savage to prime time TV and West End spectaculars. He will talk about his love of the Salvation Army, of old women in cafes, of people on the bus, of the volunteers at Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, of pagans and witches. Although the middle was a bit long and repetitive the rest of his life story is the usual standard for him.
