Larger instruments show a grey ellipse with a darker region in the centre that creates the appearance of a ring. The concept of kids having to pilot a spaceship while their parents are asleep (similar to the cryogenic sleep trope) due to "an event" is interesting, but this story relied a little to heavily on too-familiar tropes. Stories sometimes strain against circumstance and genre, but this is a story that fits so very well into its situation and could even give more under the circumstances. The winners of The Farshore Reading for Pleasure Teacher Awards 2023, highlighting the work schools are doing to encourage a love of reading, have. Hugely gripping, with incredible twists and a fast-paced, action-packed story, this is an unputdownable science fiction adventure – perfect for fans of Mortal Engines and Star Wars.

When Beth was told to go to the sleep pod immediately so the others could jump and when she got in she lost her memory and couldn't remember anything but eventually, everything came back to her. The seventh magnitude companion (C) is another spectroscopic binary comprising an A-type primary and B-type companion in a 30-day orbit. When the term ‘open cluster’ is mentioned, the mind’s eye image is of a group of stars in the eyepiece. In the story, a number of families are heading into space to a far galaxy and a new life and the plotline seems to suggest that the excitement is all to come, with the reality of life on a planet so different from Earth bound to present challenges. So it was the book club’s first time in space, and actually mine when it came to middle grade reading.

And that is why I am so delighted that the book has now been shortlisted for this prize: because it means that Waterstones booksellers up and down the country will be recommending it to more and more readers, giving those readers the opportunity to discover something completely new, and allowing Orion Lost to find the audience that I have always hoped for it.At this pace we can see how the southern and then northern hemispheres are angled towards the warmth of the Sun, taking us through yearly cycles of summer and winter.

It is an unbelievably gripping, fast-paced, and exciting story, and while it has all of the ingredients of classic science fiction – spaceships, aliens, A. Well, there are lots of different approaches to this and I don't think there's really a wrong or a right one. I read a few more pages the next day and said to my co-worker, "It's quite good" (for speakers of English around the world, in NZ idiom that means it's totally dependent on my intonation as to whether I mean it's a little less than average-good or whether I mean it's almost really-good. The message repeated: 'This is a general Mayday from the Earth ship Orion, four months out of Earth'… Something found them.

Use a 6-inch reflector, making sure you keep nearby Alnitak out of the field of view to improve contrast, and you should be able to see its mottled fan shape. I think that this is a great adventure for those that like Space, Starwars and adventures that are out of this world. It had been patched and refitted, and its life support systems – gravity, oxygen, food processing – had been extended to cope with a much larger crew. Being in charge is never easy, and it's particularly uneasy when your crew is panicking, you're responsible for the lives of every one on board, you're ricocheting from crisis to crisis, and the AI might actually be evil. It has a simple premise backed up with a host of great characters and an uncomplicated science fiction, space atmosphere that I've never experienced from a middle grade before. It’s a book that I knew would rely on word-of-mouth recommendation – and from booksellers in particular. To see the famous Horsehead Nebula, you have to be able to pick up faint emission nebula IC 434, which hangs south from mag 1.
