The main character is an insufferable "quirky" girl who is innocent and always happy (it's not 2011 anymore, can we stop with this trope.The premise of Other Birds intrigued me and happily I've found a new-to-me Southern author to catch up with.

Words cannot explain how I felt about these amazing characters – they were so original, flawed, but ultimately full of love. The other residents who live in the Dellawisp are a curious mélange of outcasts, ghosts, and birds, but on the first night, when one of her neighbors is found dead, Zoey’s quiet summer becomes something quite extraordinary. This story brought such a smile to my face and I loved all the birds, including the invisible pigeon named Pigeon. Interactions between the residents of the Dellawisp are complex as are the 'ghost' stories that form the 'glue'.

In the final chapter, Pigeon—who is really Paloma in disguise—accepts that Zoey no longer needs her, and leaves for her own adventures. The reader follows Zoey as she moves into her (deceased) mother's Dellawisp Condos, and meets the various quirky characters that live there. Zoey has memories of this place, memories of when she was there with her mother as a child, but that was long ago. Given the disaster the unit was left in, as her belongings are slowly inspected, we learn of her son Oliver who attends college in CA. Many things can hold you back to set them free: guilt feelings, fears, loneliness, disorientation, resentments, unconditional love, sadness.
