If I ever end up teaching in a middle school, this is definitely a book I will have on the docket to pull out for a novel study. The result was The Breadwinner trilogy, which tells the compelling stories of Parvana and her best friend, Shauzia. These books help us understand how rough life really is for some children around the world, like the character Parvana and her sisters and brother who are constantly going through tragedy and hardship. When Deborah Ellis read about the Taliban occupation of Afghanistan and about their brutal treatment of girls and women, she decided that she had to get involved.

These books appeal to me because the realities of war and the horrible hardships faced by the people at the hands of the Taliban are heartbreaking and important to be aware of.I am a huge fan of The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini, and those books would definitely be a good follow up for kids who read and enjoy The Breadwinner Trilogy. I think her journey to overcome major changes and challenges as a young girl growing up in Afghanistan is inspiring. I would definitely recommend these books to any person who enjoys reading books based on real life events.

The fifth book in Ellis's Breadwinner series, One More Mountain was published by Groundwood books in 2022, takes up Parvana's story as the Americans are leaving Afghanistan and the Taliban are regaining control in Kabul. Because Parvana's father can no longer work, her family situation becomes dire, as women are not allowed to travel outside the home unless accompanied by a related male in Afghanistan. I would recommend this trilogy to any young reader, in fact I think it is an important piece that all preteens should have on their shelves.
