Stewart’s father, Alfred, was a Dunkirk veteran plagued by PTSD and alcoholism, whose brutish sway scarred Patrick and his younger brother Trevor for years. Talking about how as a teen, he used to make a disabled boy beat his stump of a hand into a wall until it bled, and then bragging just a few lines later about how his empathy for a dying squirrel must have been an early sign he'd be a great actor because he had so much empathy? His voice comes through clearly in the writing, the conversational tone and bits of humor making for an enjoyable read that is unmistakably Patrick Stewart.

Patrick Stewart: dark confessions - The Telegraph Making It So by Patrick Stewart: dark confessions - The Telegraph

To qualify, you must not have previously purchased a ticket for the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, the Swan Theatre, The Other Place or the RSC residency at the Barbican, London. I can remember watching one episode of the TOS when it first came out, and then watching reruns as a teenager after school. He generously shares photographs -- and is sure to include the ones to which he makes special allusion in the text. In fact, snubs from creative titans have tended to rankle with Stewart, not least the icy reception from Gene Roddenberry, the creator of Star Trek, when, in 1986, Stewart was first put forward for the role of Jean-Luc Picard. Stewart remembers his father later removing his clothes and quietly placing them on his bed in a neat pile, as if nothing at all had happened. He is rather serious by nature and finds true meaning in works of art and performances by actors he admires, which naturally leads him to imbue meaning in everything he does.

Making It So by Patrick Stewart | Waterstones

easy going autobiography of the Actor Patrick Stewart from his humble origins from Mirfield to a well known stage actor and later a tv star with star trek the next generation. And you can be by yourself and have your own friends there and there will be people to look after you. I was braced for a ghost written tome, and was delighted when it was apparent from the first page that was not to be the case. Sir Patrick Stewart is a distinguished stage and screen actor whose illustrious career spans six decades. Now, he presents his long-awaited memoir, Making It So, a revealing portrait of an artist whose astonishing life – from his humble beginnings in Yorkshire to the heights of Hollywood and worldwide acclaim – proves a story as exuberant, definitive, and enduring as the author himself. He laughs, as if suddenly incredulous that a boy from small-town Yorkshire might see fit to participate in psychoanalysis. I found the whole book to be surprisingly entertaining and adored hearing about the many parts of his career and life of which I was previously ignorant. We don’t have any allocation left for this performance but please try booking directly with the Ambassadors Theatre who may still have tickets available. Now, he presents his long-awaited memoir, Making It So, a revealing portrait of a driven artist whose astonishing life - from his humble and hardscrabble beginnings in Yorkshire, to the dizzying heights of Hollywood and worldwide acclaim - proves a story as exuberant, definitive and enduring as the author himself.

Making It So: A Memoir – Special Edition with Postcard

This is a sweet story of his childhood growing up in Yorkshire, then his move to the stage acting, and finally Hollywood. I loved all the content about his personal life outside the theater but it’s apparent how much of an impact the stage has had on the entirety of his life. When Stewart was miscast (in his view) as Cassius to John Wood’s sarcastic Brutus in 1972, it’s a wonder they didn’t ignore Caesar and start stabbing each other. He describes some of these early humiliations with the self-deprecating wisdom only 60 years’ hindsight can bestow. By turns funny and thoughtful, Sir Patrick gives behind-the-scenes glimpses into his various experiences on stage and screen. This book is full of all of the plays he did which is before my time but I enjoyed his behind the scenes stories about doing the plays. Packed with what are clearly well-honed stories from his decades as an actor on stage and screen, Making It So is remarkably thoughtful and candid. Patrick’s early life is a Dickensian tale of domestic violence and misfortune, transformed by chance and some good folk into the actor internationally admired and loved.

I listened to the audible narrated by Himself, in what for me is the beloved dulcet voice of Captain Picard of my adolescent favorite series Star Trek the Next Generation(still my favorite). Now, he presents his long-awaited memoir, Making It So, a revealing portrait of an artist whose astonishing life—from his humble beginnings in Yorkshire, England, to the heights of Hollywood and worldwide acclaim—proves a story as exuberant, definitive, and enduring as the author himself. There are not a lot of personal stories, some, but not a lot, which I think is perfectly fine to keep that side of his life more private, but I loved the glimpses into who he really is.

His beloved screen work, known to audiences worldwide, includes his iconic portrayals ofStar Trek’s Jean-Luc Picard andX-Men’s Professor Charles Xavier. Just when I thought I was going to get away with not having a role, he ended by saying, “Stewart: Shylock. He spent too long on each of his theatre exploits (and I was a theatre major) and not enough on the rest of his life (build up to marriages were a few paragraphs). In 2012, Stewart accepted an invitation to participate in an episode of the BBC history series Who Do You Think You Are?
