About this deal

I would much rather see everyone over the age of 40 having a full assessment of all their risks, including cholesterol, blood pressure, smoking, gender and weight. When it is important to distinguish them, a raised minus sign ¯ is sometimes used for negative constants, as in elementary education, the programming language APL, and some early graphing calculators.

It showed that for every 1 mmol/L that 'bad' LDL cholesterol was lowered using statins, the risk of heart attack, related surgery or stroke was reduced by 21% and the risk of dying by 12%. I add two sandbags (down two), subtract five puffs of hot air (down five), subtract one sandbag (up one), then add seven puffs of hot air (up seven). They suggested that existing guidelines that excluded these patients from being offered statins should be looked at again, with a view to expanding the role of statin treatment.

We would advise choosing one (or at most two) models at first, to avoid confusing students with lots of conflicting images.

Thanks to Alan Mesfin who suggested an alternative of tying on helium balloons (as in the film "Up") instead of adding puffs of hot air to represent adding a positive number.

That doesn't mean people don't get side-effects on statins - it means they get them if they think they're taking a statin, whether they are or not. The − may be derived from a tilde written over ⟨m⟩ when used to indicate subtraction; or it may come from a shorthand version of the letter ⟨m⟩ itself. Once the class are getting confident, I usually start recording some of the calculations on the board, or getting a student to do it for me!All tablets (whether placebo or not) carry side-effects for some people - doing more exercise, losing that bit of extra weight or stopping smoking certainly don't. National guidelines suggest we should be considering statin treatment for anyone with a 10-year risk of heart attack or stroke that's higher than 20%. Suddenly the number of people complaining of muscle pain in the treatment arm was much higher than those not taking tablets. The editor of the BMJ announced that the BMJ wants to '…alert readers, the media, and the public to the withdrawal of these statements so that patients who could benefit from statins are not wrongly deterred from starting or continuing treatment because of exaggerated concerns over side-effects. e., minus) appeared for the first time in Luca Pacioli's mathematics compendium, Summa de arithmetica, geometria, proportioni et proportionalità, first printed and published in Venice in 1494.
