I repeated the process of laying down strips of fabric tape to one side of the sleeve (this time in longer pieces, like a few inches at a time) so that one side was entirely lined with tape. I used her belt as my inspiration for this belt but I actually printed off a pattern for the silver medallions from Craftiness is not Optionalbecause they perfectly fit my belt pattern! I can’t wait till my twins grow a little older and I can talk them into dressing as Luke and Leia ;).

I carefully folded up a quarter inch of the rough cut edge and patted the open side of the tape to it. Once all the seams were taped, I put the costume back on and paraded proudly around the house in it. Cut a piece of fusible interfacing if you want it stiffened up but my daughter said it felt better softer so we didn't use it. I did make these Leia bun yarn things, but I’m not sure I like them…for one thing, what am I supposed to do with her other hair…? NOTE: Depending on how thick your sheet is, you may want to wear a white tank top and leggings underneath. And standing next to three other people dressed up as Star Wars characters, no one mistook me for anyone other than Princess Leia.

Then I went back and folded segments of the other edge, peeled back one portion of paper at a time, and pressed the edges together, making sure that all the sticky tape inside was covered by fabric. In retrospect, I could’ve wet my hair to keep the fly-aways from sticking out, or used bobby pins to get the buns to sit against the sides of my head.Iron on the fusible interfacing to one side of the collar on the wrong side of the fabric if you are using interfacing. It’s great for sewing on trims and such, but I used it to keep my little “medallions” in place while I sewed them on, since pins would leave holes in this material. I am still working on Margui’s costume (thank God this year she is not a princess or a fairy but a witch!

I didn’t plan to make a proper hem for the neck, and luckily I didn’t need to since I was able to carefully cut a clean line. My husband and I have a son and baby daughter (whom I was 9 months pregnant with when this photo was taken! My plan was to knit a brown hat and then make buns of felt … but instead I’ll make these and attach them to the hat! If you can pin the hood to the dress while the recipient is wearing the dress that is helpful but not necessary.

You don’t have to be super careful about cutting on a straight line here as the rough edges will eventually be hidden in the seam. Also want to give a shout out to this blog post on making a child’s version of this costume, which served as my initial inspiration. With right sides together sew the short sides of the collar together leaving about 1/2 an inch un-sewn at the long raw edge.
