Description

The goal of the game is to have the lowest points, and that can prove difficult when you can’t see your cards! For one thing, the chance that an opponent will draw a power card is no longer very small, which matters a little for a draw 2 and matters a lot for a swap.

Rat-a-Tat Cat is a little too simple for hardcore gamers but for children and families, it is phenomenal (one of the best family/children’s games I’ve reviewed). This unknown random card is discarded face up for their opponent to take, so eventually all low cards will be claimed by the end of the draw deck. You can either play for a certain number of rounds, a specific length of time, or until all but one player have hit 1oo points (in which case the player remaining is the winner).Players can only do this one time and will need to remember what card they were without writing it down.

This is the type of game you could play in a car, waiting at the doctor’s office, or just about anywhere else. The objective of the game is to try to get the lowest hand score you possibly can before the round ends. With the ability to choose the number of dice to roll each turn, you’ll quickly learn learn that sometimes your choices will pay off, and other times, your best laid plans may be thwarted by an unlucky roll! I absolutely do not have a photo of this one because every time we play, I’m too busy wiping my tears away from laughing so hard.

If a player elects to grab the card from the discard pile, they MUST use it to replace one of their cards (either one of the two outer cards which they know the value of or one of the two unknown middle cards). The top card of the draw pile is turned over to start the discard pile (unless it is a power card in which case it is placed back in the deck and a new card is turned over).

Players need to remember all their known cards and should attempt to replace their high numbered cards with lower ones. The game consists of a deck of cards: four sets of cards numbered from 0 through to 8, nine copies of the 9 card, and three of each of the action cards ("Peek", "Swap" and "Draw 2"). Any revealed action cards at the end of the round are put into the discard pile and replaced with drawn number cards from the draw pile. While Rat-a-Tat Cat isn’t the most educational game out there, it does still help kids learn things and build skills. But you reasoning made me realize that hidden information begins to be revealed as the draw pile gets close to exhausted, for those who precisely track all cards played.

The main thing the game does is help build memory but it also helps develop some math skills as well. This is optional, and the player who drew the card can decline, as they are unable to look at either of the cards they are swapping. It’s pretty obvious I really like Rat-a-Tat Cat as a family/children’s game and would highly recommend it. Because of all this, and because of my youngest’s contagious love of play, he soon found himself with a Dragonwood gang. They may choose to draw the last card that had been discarded and use it to replace one of their cards. Another nice thing about the game is that the box is small (a little bigger than a deck of cards) and very portable.
