Many people will remember Bligh from movies as the tyrannical captain of the Bounty who drove his men to mutiny, and throughout his career Bligh’s character was the subject of contention and debate. We’re not scared of being on either side and we’ve had terrrific engagement with people who sit on either side of the fence.

When he arrived at the Corps barracks, he made the extraordinary decision to appoint himself lieutenant governor and arrest Bligh, though he had no legal right to do so.William Bligh succeeded Philip Gidley King as the fourth Governor of New South Wales in 1805, having been offered the position by Sir Joseph Banks. Týmto sme si zaistili striebornú medailu na IWSC 2012 a „Chvályhodné“ odporúčanie nezávislého Diffordovho sprievodcu. Major Johnston disliked Bligh not only because of his attempts to erode the Corps’ rum monopoly but also because the governor showed open contempt for his unit’s officers and men. Colonial officials in London had not provided the colony with enough currency, so trade was conducted using barter, promissory notes (IOUs) and coins from around the world. These are just some of the questions raised in the examination of William Bligh’s tempestuous career to be considered in the museum’s upcoming winter 2019 exhibition Bligh: - Hero or Villian?

They arrived around dawn and then later in the morning, with 50 militia of the Loyal Volunteers, they pursued the rebels who were now heading to Green Hills, today's Windsor. Having arrived in the colony in December 1809 with the 73rd Regiment of Foot, which was to take over from the 102nd Regiment of Foot, Governor Lachlan Macquarie was able to control the rum trade more effectively, introducing and enforcing a licensing system. There’s no shortage of rums that are inspired by tales of pirates bootlegging, smuggling and pillaging across the Caribbean, all while sharing a hearty bottle of 'grog'*. The regiment was formed in England in June 1789 as a permanent unit to relieve the New South Wales Marine Corps, who had accompanied the First Fleet to Australia. Striking a balance between national unity and cultural diversity that appropriately recognises and respects Indigenous, colonial and migrant heritage but also looks to the future, remains a challenge, but one we should look toward with confidence. Australia's first and only military coup, the name derives from the illicit trade of rum in early Sydney, over which the 'Rum Corps', as the New South Wales Corps became known, had maintained a monopoly.
