About this deal

It's a shame that you didn't find the 24 other reading activities that I include in the resource as useful as the other reviewers have done. I did enjoy the story but I found it hard to read some of the words and I would recommond this book for children over 10 year olds. He has had a varied career path before becoming an author including jobs as a: Head Teacher, Caretaker, Strawberry Picker, Jam Doughnut Stuffer!

Although I liked the book, it didn't make me want to read more by the same author as the actual chariot race was a disappointment. My favourite part in the story was at the start when it told me about the boys dream to be a chariot racer. I can’t imagine what it would be like being a child reading it to myself, maybe it would have awakened a performer in me, maybe it would have irritated me. To begin with I thought the book was excellent and I couldn’t wait to read more of Jeremy Strong’s books. We then wanted to understand where the Romans came in the world’s history, so we made a human timeline outside to get our bearings of where the Romans were in history. But when Perilus's hero, the brilliant charioteer Scorcha , goes missing on the day of the big race, Perilus finds his wish coming true sooner than he'd imagined! The only thing that would make it better was if it was noted at which page in the book to stop and do which activity. I imagine the plot (such as it is) may be a little overstuffed and confusing for children - but not being in the room to get their reactions, I don’t know. I like learning about Gladiators and the towns Romans lived in but I think the book didn’t inspire me even more.

We are continuing to have 30 minutes of quiet reading twice a week and are monitoring the books that pupils read. But Fibbicus Biggicus has actually stolen 10,000 denarii and a criminal cannot marry so in the end she can marry Sorcha! Even though Scorcha is an excellent charioteer, he does not have his own chariot, and Croakbag tells us what happens on the day of his big race.Even though it has some tricky words in the book, this book made me want to read more about the author Tony Bradman and his books. For this part, the section to be read aloud is an extract from the chapter(s) read in lesson one; generally, the extract which is most difficult to understand or has the most to be gained from discussion. I met with Jess, our Y5 leader who is in charge of reading, to discuss how to move forward with whole-class reading in our school. Hi Jo, I really want to start this approach in my school (we have huge classes, so carousel is impossible! He loves writing stories because it's 'the only time you alone have complete control and can make anything happen'.

Ella: I really enjoyed this book, because it was funny and it was told by a Raven who is best friends with perilus. I really enjoyed reading this book because it is full of humour and is different to other books I have read. At first, teachers must model note-taking slowly and carefully, explaining how and why we take notes. It was not my favourite Jeremy Strong book, because it’s not as funny as some of his other books (e. I was surprised not to enjoy it as I had read other books by Jeremy Strong before – like “The Hundred Mile and Hour Dog” which I really enjoyed.

On the day of the big race Perilus manages to get a chariot… Can he win Scorcher his place in the green team? I would recommend this book to 8-10 year olds because younger may not understand some of the language in it. I've recently found you and I'm so encouraged by your work with looking at reading instruction so differently.Jess had completed some observations across the school so had an idea what was happening in different year groups. Quizzes are used regularly for retrieval practice, to remind children of what they have previously learned about words and the text. How do you think (if at all) this could work over 4/5 30 minute sessions over the course of the week? If you are interested in tweaking your teaching of reading to include any of these strategies, I'd highly recommend you start with Nick Hart's blog postand Reading Reconsidered. Perilus’ family are very wealthy; he lives with his dad, mum and sister in a large villa and the family have two slaves.
