I’m looking forward to testing these out more in warmer temperatures where the EVA foam won’t be as stiff and the breathability of the upper can be taken advantage of. However, the entire midsole is made of Pwrrun+, an expanded polyurethane foam that’s more comfortable than EVA-based Pwrrun.

One thing that I did notice over longer distances, however, was the overlay across the toe box for protection would often push against my toenails. The Peregrine 12 flies over soft or slippery ground, and the narrow platform nimbly front points through tight sections. A metal D-rings provides a secure anchor for the gaiter hook, and there’s sufficient ground clearance for the straps to hug the shoe. The Peregrine 12 is compatible with a gaiter, so I attached a Gore-Tex gaiter for winter conditions. The result is a trail runner that can take on most surfaces, while feeling agile and comfortable all day. With better traction and waterproof GORE-TEX® protection, nothing gets between you and the trail ahead.

The intended result is less energy loss and a reduced rate of fatigue, meaning you can go further and faster. The Run Company require all goods to be unused and in unopened packaging within 30 days of purchase. The width of the forefoot is moderate; there is enough room to move my toes, but this is definitely not a “foot-shaped” shoe like Altra or Topo. The toe box is protected by a hard bumper offering forgiveness from ramming toes into rocks, roots, and hazards. Or are you upset that they’ve moved away from more of a traditional do-everything shoe and they’re starting to slide back into a faster-paced, racing lightweight shoe?

As the Peregrine is a trail shoe based on a popular road running shoe, these shoes are built for speed. The expanded PU foam footbed performs equally well in freezing temperatures, and is resistant to compression fatigue. GORE-TEX® Invisible Fit technology provides best-in-class waterproof protection with a flexible, made-for-you feel.in the toe — doesn't seem as thick as other options we tested, the overall average amount of cushion across the whole shoe is more than most. But our feet felt exposed in sharp, rocky terrain and more than once painfully bumped our insteps when scrambling up through tight passages. Much of the speed on the new Peregrine 12 comes from the complete redesign of the outsole, which offers a level of traction few other trail runners reach.

Overall, they’ve stripped down the outsole and because of that, the shoe weighs about two ounces less than the previous version. If your old Peregrines are looking worse for wear, you'll be able to slip right into the newest version without missing a beat, and this version is sure to win over some new converts as well. First, the lockdown of the midfoot provides the necessary stability for quick movements and turns required on trails. But when you start stripping down a shoe, something’s got to give, and in this case, we’re getting a little bit of fraying. The shoe is best suited to technical or loose terrain and would not be my first choice for firm trails or roads.
