About this deal

Leafy is an ass, and he brings most (but not all) of his troubles on himself, yet he has the reader’s sympathy throughout. It's interesting to test the reader's prejudices, or shrewdness, or familiarity with the lower levels of London society. Morgan agrees and quits his post, finally realizing how the chaos he has created in an effort to fuel his own self-interest, both at home and at work, has ultimately led to his downfall. He also became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in the same year, and is also an Officier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. There is an autobiographical element in that the character of Dr Murray is very much a two-dimensional portrait of my father.

As this convoluted scheme plays out, Arthur wants Morgan to get into Sam's good graces; obviously, Arthur has no idea about the affair with Celia. Hallewell Publications is a small publishing house based in Argyll which concentrates largely on a single project: a popular series of walking guides which covers Scotland and selected areas of England. Lots of novelists think, 'I wouldn't mind having a go at that', but actually it's quite a demanding world. The Romantic, always enjoyable, ranks with two of his best: The New Confessions and Any Human Heart. I don't want that built-in obsolescence that you get from referring knowingly to, you know, the ninth series of Big Brother.

At once an intimate portrait of one man’s life and an expansive exploration of the beginning of the twentieth century. There he falls into a tempestuous relationship with a fellow patient, the neurotic sculptress Hettie Bull, who after some months accuses him of rape. And a diary of sorts provides the basis for Boyd’s 1987 epic, The New Confessions, in which film-maker John James Todd’s overriding obsession with Rousseau’s Confessions becomes the basis for his own confessional memoir of a life lived, through war, romance and ambition, in tandem with the twentieth century. But Boyd’s most daring commentary on artistic representation – and indeed, his most ambitious use to date of the fictionalized diary format – is reserved for an engrossing commentary on literature itself. If a widening grim is the test of a novel’s entertainment value in retospect, “A Good Man in Africa” romps home”.

Some of the reviews I wrote in my 20s are savage, so I can't complain if I get a kicking from time to time.

Much of Boyd’s writing utilises the awkward intersection of private and public life, and the suffering of individuals who – like the unfortunate protagonist of his screenplay Good and Bad at Games (1983) – cannot match the cultural demands of their environment. Unlike Buchan’s protagonist, however, Kindred decides to remain in London, abandoning his identity and initially living rough on a piece of waste ground in Chelsea, existing on handouts and charity, as he tries to piece together the circumstances of the killing.

Boyd has been with his wife Susan since they met as students at Glasgow University and all his books are dedicated to her. He wrote the television screenplays Good and Bad at Games (1983) and Dutch Girls (1985) (collected in book form as School Ties in 1985), and has adapted two novels by Evelyn Waugh for television: Scoop (1987) and Sword of Honour (2001). In his 1981 debut novel, A Good Man in Africa, Boyd displayed his affiliation to an English tradition of the comic novel of expatriate life, together with his allegiance to one of his many literary mentors, Evelyn Waugh. I can't really explain why this paragraph from my novel The New Confessions (1987) haunts me - in fact, I could probably choose something similar from all 10 novels I have written.Sam Adekunle finds out and he now blackmails the hero, asking him to bribe Doctor Murray, whose negative report may cost the corrupt power lord a lot of money. I feel I am in Berlin in 1926 (and I know I have the details exactly right) and somehow I have managed to capture the subjective, contingent, imperfect view of life (John James Todd doesn't know why the bands are playing) that is the one we all have to live with. The Romantic is certainly a crowd-pleaser, an old-fashioned bildungsroman that kicks off in the early 1800s and follows the hero, Cashel Greville Ross, through a long and peripatectic life . The fantasy of being, as Chekhov said, a free artist was coloured by novels I'd read or movies I'd seen. As the second in command to the Deputy High Commissioner, he occupies what could be considered an important post in Her Majesty the Queen's diplomatic service, if only Nkongsamba could be considered a posting of any consequence.

In Waiting for Sunrise, Lysander Rief travels to Vienna in 1913, seeking therapeutic treatment for an embarrassing sexual problem. From what I have seen – the opening episode and a showreel of the remaining three – Any Human Heart is going to be a treat. While the world is reeling our trio is involved in making a rackety Swingin’ Sixties British movie in sunny Brighton. Armadillo (1998) is set in London and follows the adventures of insomniac loss-adjuster Lorimer Black. There were hundreds of thousands of children dying of starvation, and a very powerful army slowly crushing the lifeblood out of this small secessionist state, all done with massive, absurd, surreal inefficiency.Take a look at the center ring, where you will see displayed the most amazing, most colorful series of history books that the world has ever seen! Join now to access our Study Guides library, which offers chapter-by-chapter summaries and comprehensive analysis on more than 5,000 literary works from novels to nonfiction to poetry. With a nod to John Buchan’s The 39 Steps, Ordinary Thunderstorms opens as Adam Kindred, a divorced climatologist, arrives in London for a job interview and almost immediately becomes incriminated in a murder.
