Description

Following the Rule of Threes the older trio creep stealthily upon the bird on the ground, in a tree, and out on a frozen pond, always failing to catch their prey.

They fail, time and time again, while the smallest member of the party attracts a flock of birds with his friendliness, kindness, and offer of food. We Have A Plan (Walker Books), Chris Haughton introduces us to four individuals, three of whom believe they have a strategy for success. In my understanding the three older characters embody the greed and the destructive nature of human beings, however, in contrast, the youngest embodies being generous, patient and loving towards the environment and everyone who resides there. They also manage to reflect the mischief and comedy inherent in a narrative where a group of hapless humans insists on becoming bird-catchers, even if one of them has reservations about their intentions. The story dialogue is sparse and repetitive--which is great for beginning readers, not so much for older kids--leaving the art to be the focal point.

And thus we end back where we started, with the stalkers unwilling to accept the truth and Little One shrugging at the reader. we have a planand Goodnight Everyone have been translated into more than 24 languages and won awards in10countries such as Dutch Picturebook of the Year, the Childrens Book Ireland Bisto Awardand the Association of Illustrators award. What I liked the best was there could be a drawn out pantomime effect, similar to A BIT LOST and GEORGE, with an anticipatory page turn between ‘ready/steady’ where the three position themselves to catch the bird and GO! But look more closely and you will see that the littlest one doesn't join in - he has a much better idea.

The ending was appropriately silly, with the littlest one shrugging as if to say, "Here we go again. He was listed in Time magazine's 'DESIGN 100' for the work he has been doing for fair trade clothing company People Tree. We had so many great lines we had to work on editing it down and in fact I think there is enough material for another picture book in there if we are lucky. But at the turn of the page we find a ridiculous bunch of very tangled characters and a blissfully ignorant bird flying away. All the colours leap to life, something that was beautiful and new and full of wonder - or frightening, or disturbing - it's all there. We Have a Plan, our hugely successful adaptation of Chris Haughton’s much-loved modern classic, is available to watch for free on YouTube! His combination of collage and silhouette, aided by a judiciously selective use of colour, results in a sequence of images that, in more than one sense, tell their own story.

There was so much shifting of compositions around on the pages that it became clear the best way to compose each page was by collage. Mixing live music with puppetry, this online kids' opera featured as one of the Guardian's 'Hottest front-room seats' during its first run last year. Finally chased off by the birds, they spy a squirrel and set off in hot pursuit with another ‘plan’. I was able to use the hook line for a behaviour management tool, the setting to develop a whole class soundscape and the bulk of the book for ethical comprehension investigation. This was quite the giggle fest which is lovely to see on him when he is normally hurrying to finish the book so he can get to the drawing!

Like me, many young readers will enjoy the story just for its amusement while others will see its life lessons about the impact of force versus gentleness. which I am not sure is a word but I counted it anyway, I even counted the five words of the title which is a trick i picked up at school. So another saga begins… Children will enjoy the suspense, slapstick and being smarter than the villains in this humorous tale.

Additionally, he is not looking straight ahead but watching the other three, this gives a feeling of him/her observing the other three. Until, that is, the littlest hunter tries to make friends with the bird and gets them in much more trouble than they bargained for. The eyes of the character seem very similar to the moon that almost seems as it is watching them after they tried to catch the birds. Pleasingly spare and simple in design and storyline, and ending with a good joke, this is a perfectly executed picture book. This is a great picturebook for all ages as it is very simple and understood by the youngest but at the same time, the quirky characters and the colour choices make it very intriguing and interesting even for older children and adults.

Oh No George' came out in March 2012 and has been nominated for 6 awards in 4 countries including the Roald Dahl Funny award.
