About this deal

Initially, your shrinky dink will curl up, but keep heating, moving the heat gun around, and it will flatten out as more of the shrink plastic shrinks fully. I remember my grandmother melting white Styrofoam cups in the oven enough to make them look like hats.

If your design does not entirely flatten, make sure it is is good and hot, and then place an acrylic block or another ceramic tile on top of it, to flatten it while it cools. If you are wanting to attach your shape to something don’t forget to punch a hole before placing in the oven. Preheat the oven to 325°F then put your Shrinky Dink into the oven for 1-3 minutes or until it’s flat. If you have a Shrinky Dinks plastic sheet, create a design on the rough side of the sheets, or use permanent marker to decorate the smooth side. You can either trace using a template placed under the shrink plastic sheet, or draw freehand as you prefer.

Shrinky Dinks were invented in 1973 by Betty Morris and Kate Bloomberg, two housewives in Brookfield, Wisconsin, as a Cub Scout project with their sons. We’re a design-led Australian brand that creates gifts which nurture confidence and creativity in kids. They made Fathers Day key rings and the a5 size was perfect for making two shrinkies (a picture and a message for their dad/special person). The shrink plastic is quite brittle, so it is best to use small, sharp scissors for this, though most rough edges will be hidden once shrunk. We have had the best results by keeping the bulk of the design as outlines, and only filling some of the shapes with solid colour. However, all you need is a little grade 0 glass paper or fine sandpaper which lets you gently roughen the surface of the shrink plastic sheet. It has been found to leach styrene–a neurotoxin and possible human carcinogen–and has been banned in cities like Portland, Ore.

Shrinky Dinks were soon licensed to be manufactured by the major toy companies of the time such as Milton Bradley, Colorforms, Western Publishing and Skyline Toys.In 2014, a team from Harvard University and MIT used Shrinky Dinks to create self-assembling robots. Use the colored pencil on the rough side of the sheets, and use Sharpie or permanent marker on the smooth side. Start by securing your template on a solid surface – we are using the ceramic tile we use with our heat gun – and attaching the shrink plastic sheet on top of it. The reason the plastic works for designs is because it’s made out of polystyrene just as Shrinky Dinks are.

To use an oven, preheat it to 170°C and place the shrink plastic on a baking tray and put a wire rack on top. We are using the template created by Anne Oliver for her free heart embroidery design that we have for you on Gathered. If you have a heat gun, place the shrink plastic on a heat-proof surface like a baking tray or ceramic tile. In 2009, an art therapy supervision class at Emporia State University explored the use of Shrinky Dinks in art therapy.Use a wooden skewer (or any heat-proof tool) to gently hold the image down while you apply heat from a heat gun. She loves using kinetic techniques to make cards that move – she was editor of Papercraft inspirations magazine for over four years, creating loads of card making video tutorials at www. However, oily or waxy substances (such as cheap colored pencils, [ clarification needed] crayons or oil paint) are not suitable because they melt or burn in high heat.
