By going up a bit from a 24mm, Sigma was not only able to produce a lens that is cheaper but also make one that is much more compact than a traditional 24-70mm f2. I’m still not sure that I would have prioritized producing this particular lens when the audience is clamoring for other areas of greater need, but clearly Sigma saw things differently. However, for any type of work where you would be looking for subject isolation, you shouldn’t have a problem — I think that is the strength of this lens. In all cases, the L-mount lenses take advantage of a relatively large mounting flange of 55mm, and a close proximity of 20mm to the image sensor.

This issue does mitigate slightly as you close down, but I still don’t see the resolution that someone who wants to shoot super-sharp landscapes would find acceptable. Up front we have a 67mm filter thread, which is much smaller than the 82mm filter thread we see on either the Sigma or Sony 24-70mm F2.As seen in the photos below, it complements a 35mm full-frame camera like the new Sony Alpha A7 III that we tested it with, and it also feels very much at home on a smaller APS-C body, where the effective focal range changes to 42-105mm. Even though the camera was always the Leica SL-2, the system as a whole felt less flashy when I used the Sigma Art lens. DG DN Art, launched just over a year earlier, which is noticeably larger at 88x123mm and getting on for double the weight at 835g.
