Consequently, on-ear headphones are the toughest kind to fit out there, and among the worst at blocking out noise (save for open-back headphones). The plastic headband, swivel joints, and ear cup housing don’t feel remotely rugged and we’d be remiss to recommend “chucking” them in your bag or treating them at all unkindly. There’s definitely a lack of rumble in pretty much any Run the Jewels songs or movies with a lot of explosions or huge machines in them, but on the whole bass sounds come in at least loud enough to be heard over competing vocals. This is done in two ways: firstly, we ask our five member expert listening panel to note how much sound they can hear while the headphones are playing next to them. The Sony WH-CH510 headphones are on-ear wireless headphones that support Siri and Google voice control.

As expected of inexpensive headphones, the Sony WH-CH510 has a very basic foam and soft coating for ear pads. We spent more than a week with it as a daily driver, and we’ve recorded everything you need to know about the headphones. It’s worth noting that, although this particular reviewer has an abnormally large head and often pushes headphone bands to their limit, the Sony WH-CH510 only got about halfway extended before sitting comfortably on both ears.If you just look at the score at the top of the page, you’d get a pretty generous assessment of the Sony WH-CH510. The fact that these Sony WH-CH510 headphones are in the on-ear format means you won’t quite get the audio quality that over-ear competitors offer.

Sony WH-CH510 review - Which? Sony WH-CH510 review - Which?

Most ANC headphones have pretty good ambient-aware options on them, but the main advantage those cans have over the Sony WH-CH510 is that you can turn the feature off. This makes the Sony WH-CH510 considerably more compact, but arguably a little less comfortable (it also impacts the audio quality, but more on that later). We suspect this will be particularly good news for the large-headed among us, as well as those that like to wear hats and cans at once. Of course, the upshot of all this is that they’re incredibly lightweight which, coupled with their diminutive size, makes them ultra portable. Mids are largely fine, and with everything else going on you shouldn’t hear many faults with how the higher notes of your music sound. These are on-ear headphones rather than over-ears, meaning that their cups won’t surround your ears but rather rest upon them. The recent true wireless earbuds are a little weird, but very good at doing one thing that isn’t the most popular feature out there. When it’s active, it’s a colossal distraction, but when it’s inactive the headphones are inoffensive at worst. We made our durability test for wireless headphones more rigorous from May 2018, so the star ratings for wireless headphones from then onwards aren't comparable to wireless headphones tested before. If our Sony WH-CH510 review has you considering other options, here are three more wireless headphones worth checking out.

They listen to nine recordings for each pair of headphones, which cover a wide range of music and radio genres, giving a rating per recording and an overall verdict (not an average). The higher frequencies were a little more dominant than we’d like, and the mids too suppressed, but the profile was pleasing overall. Harry is an Australian Journalist for TechRadar with an ear to the ground for future tech, and the other in front of a vintage amplifier. There’s no equalizer or any other feature to change the sound either—so if you want to tweak the sound, you’ll have to do it with your source device.Thankfully, the padding in the ear cups seems to be of a higher standard than the rest of the unit, so they’re comfortable to wear for extended periods considering their on-ear form factor. Whether you have a smaller head or larger one, the clamping force isn’t very high—again, this is a very cheap plastic—but you definitely won’t forget you’re wearing it. You can hear this for yourself in the samples below, but the office and windy samples are really rough. The Sidetone feature is well-intentioned, but an audio passthrough feature isn't appropriate to leave on all the time—something that the Sony WH-CH510 does.
