Description

Sooty first appeared on television in 1952 and was soon joined by his companions Sweep, a squeaky dog who loves bones and sausages, and Soo, Sooty's panda girlfriend. Over the years, there have been several attempts to meddle with the Sooty formula, but he’s always been saved by those who loved him. Corbett expanded on the programme further with the inclusion of story-telling, and the creation of additional characters that would co-star with Sooty. But with all the changes in technology and entertainment over the years, how has Sooty, alongside long-time pals Sweep and Soo, managed to stay relevant and continue to enjoy popularity and success into his eighth decade? And that’s why it’s been easily translated onto everybody’s hands who’s ever had a Sooty the puppet – because it ain’t that difficult to do!

Faced with the prospect of this or his programme being cancelled, Corbett decided to sign a deal with ITV to bring Sooty to commercial television, having earlier performed with the character in one of the channel's first product advertisement. Sooty can only talk in a very light whisper which can only be heard when someone puts their ear up to his mouth. The show was recorded live at the London Palladium (and later shown on prime-time ITV) in honour of the 70th birthday of the Prince of Wales in his presence and that of the Duchess of Cornwall. According to PA news agency, Brian “begged” officials on The Sooty Show to allow him to take the glove puppet home for his son Lee Kent, now 46, who was a fan of the show. The ability to comment on our stories is a privilege, not a right, however, and that privilege may be withdrawn if it is abused or misused.

He then produced the real Sooty, who promptly squirted both Davro and Matthew with his water pistol. Following his father's retirement, Matthew Corbett took sole responsibility for the puppets on The Sooty Show, although he was forced to forgo his own programme as a direct result. In Sooty's late-sixties' and early-seventies' shows, a musical act featured were The Sooty Braden Showband. In 2017, Sooty was officially inducted into The Magic Circle based upon the magic tricks he conducted with his handlers. Sooty and Sweep appeared as surprise guests on The Chris Moyles Show in his "Birthday Show" for BBC Radio 1 on 18 February 2011. Sooty, a British icon and one of the most famous glove puppets in the world is celebrating his 75th anniversary.

Soo is an intelligent, calm and collected female panda who acts as the foil for both Sooty and Sweep. He brings up the bedtime story routine, which he still does ‘verbatim’ and was Harry’s favourite routine. Sweep, also white not grey, who walked on all fours like a normal dog, but could stand as a biped to play the bugle and so on.However the majority, but interestingly not all, of Sweep's squeaks are subject to a similar 'translation' on the part of Corbett and Soo. Filming of the series took place at Brean Leisure Park, which Cadell co-owned with his brother, until it was put up for sale in 2014.
