Description

Spyder’s proprietary lens-based technology, room-light monitoring and automatic profile changing gives you precise screen color, shadow detail and white balance you can count on. TVs and monitors seem to have a lot of custom color profile options, that you may not even realize you're using, and they can really throw off your colors.

This is where I’ll use a second monitor such as the BenQ SW240 [ review] with hardware calibration and a wide (near) Adobe98 gamut. While it may be possible to use the Spyder X/X2 to calibrate certain types of OLED displays, we cannot guarantee the accuracy of the resulting calibration. I’ve the option of recalibrating my display, checking the current calibration is OK, or going through a full initial calibration. Fixed an issue that could cause SpyderX not to be recognized, if certain 3rd party USB redirection software was installed.

Great for photographers new to calibration, looking for a fast, easy way to ensure color accuracy for their monitors.

The software then fires a series of colors through the monitor which are then analysed by the Spyder X2 to see how close your monitor gets to meeting the Spyder X2's colour accuracy targets. Given monitor calibration isn't a once-only procedure - you should calibration roughly once a month to ensure consistent color accuracy - such a noticeable time saving is very handy indeed. Note: The number of displays that can be calibrated is dependent upon your computer’s video card and number of LUTs available. Depending on how large your screen is, you'll have to pull the excess cable to get the proper fitment. The X-Rite model has an advantage here, though, for using external software-based matrix corrections to deal with different display backlight technologies, while the SpyderX has those corrections baked in firmware. He concluded that the SpyderX has excellent overall accuracy and repeatability between measurements, although absolute low-light sensitivity still trails behind the X-Rite models. If you have more than one monitor, like I'll show you later, the software will select which monitor you're calibrating.

In those cases, a better investment would be to pick an inexpensive monitor with a quality IPS panel. Or there's a full-on Expert Console if you want to delve in and adjust every conceivable calibration option. The centre of the top of the device is an indicator light – also used (with the light out) as a sensor for room brightness. Think of this as similar to matching two items of clothing in daylight and then finding that under artificial lighting they differ (a metamerism problem).I guess that’s standard in life now, but it would have made much more sense for the Datacolor SpyderX Elite to be bundled with an adapter or to have one built in the way that some LaCie devices that I’ve seen do. In the cafe a few blocks away, there is a ton of natural light, they have cream colored walls, and their wooden tables combined with their tungsten lighting affect my eyes and everyone else’s in a different way. The software then fires a series of colors through the monitor which are then analysed by the SpyderX to see how close your monitor gets to meeting the SpyderX's colour accuracy targets. Note: As OLED has become more widely available, so too are the different types of OLED display technology.

Having a calibrated monitor will give you the confidence of knowing that the colors you are seeing are accurate when you put your work out there into the world. This process transforms your monitor from an unknown variable into a standard reference and can greatly improve your screen’s image quality by improving tonal response and shadow detail. As for calibration speed, when the Spyder X launched in 2019, Datacolor made a big deal of how much faster it was than the outgoing Spyder 5, and indeed it was. My main display is an old Dell 30" wide gamut LCD and its main shortcoming is grayscale banding caused by a limited 8 bit LUT. Arguably, purchasing a monitor calibration tool is a worthwhile investment even for general computer usage. Datacolor is one of two big names in monitor calibration, and its Spyder series of monitor calibrators have long been highly respected for their accuracy and ease of use.
