While the target audience is grades one through four, this book’s 338 pages provide a lot of material in comparison to most world history texts for these grades. Each chapter is further divided into several smaller sections, allowing the chapters to touch on different key historical moments of a particular time and place in a more organized manner, and making the weekly readings a little more manageable for all. It is also a very flexible program, with parents able to select from its activities to fit their individual homeschooling style, schedule and student needs.

There are a LOT of options — everything from simply reading the book and talking about it with your children to doing numerous activities and unit studies for each chapter. These suggested reading lists can be pretty eclectic, ranging from additional reference guides (such as Prehistoric World: Usborne World History), to visual fact books to entertaining fact books and more. At the back of the activity books are several resources parents can use to help with learning, such as review cards (history oriented flashcards), larger maps for doing map work, coloring pages and even short answer/multiple choice quiz pages in case parents want to add assessments into their teaching. Even my 3 year old was running around the house saying “If I were Hammurabi…” We love the activity book and we pick and choose what activities work for us. That being said, I do usually have to remind the kids about names, dates, and places because they’ll remember what happened but won’t always remember what was said.I asked my kids what God would think of the story, or how the story matches or does not match up with scripture.

History doesn’t happen in a vacuum; it happens in real places, so we put lots and lots of maps in our history books. Maybe I shelter my kids too much, but I just don’t want to talk to my kids about suicide in elementary school. Hello, I am brand new to homeschooling and will start homeschooling my sixth grade daughter in the fall, as we decided to do that for middle school and high school. I’ve looked at many programs over the years (and having been homeschooled myself I have a lot of material to work with) and hands down this works best for our family.
