About this deal

Sky Arts has commissioned Rumpus Media to make a one-off documentary, Passions: Richard Pryor by Romesh Ranganathan as part of its’ Passions season, it was announced today (Friday 21st July). I already found Romesh’s stand up funny so was really looking forward to this book and wasn’t disappointed.

I enjoyed the parts about his schooldays and was curious as to how he got from teacher to stand up comedian, but the timeline felt very disjointed. After the Top Banana stand up went well and earned the comedian a laugh - something he failed to achieve in London - he began to perform in the Brighton comedy scene for experience. Again in his Straight Outta Crawley autobiography, he details his first ever attempt at stand up as a child on holiday at the local Pontins. The letter said this person had been drinking wine while watching second world war documentaries, and was getting very worked up about history.

I was 31 and a teacher at the time, and I think I was actually aspiring to be a frustrated artist of some kind, in the way all teachers are.

The day after the show went out, I got a message saying something along the lines of, “Saw what you said about old people on Mock The Week. He also remembers putting on a thick Sri Lankan accent to deliver the jokes, and came away as the winner of the talent competition that he and two other kids entered. Ranganathan has made numerous appearances on television comedy panel shows, and in 2016 he co-presented It's Not Rocket Science on ITV, alongside Rachel Riley and Ben Miller. From 1990 to 1992, Ranganathan was educated at Reigate Grammar School, [12] an independent school (at the time one for boys, but now co-educational) in Reigate, Surrey.

I loved how Romesh told his story in his usual television chat show manner with his trademark shooting off at tangents. Jonathan Romesh Ranganathan was born on 27 March 1978 in Crawley, West Sussex, to Sri Lankan Tamil Hindu parents Ranga [8] and Sivashanthini "Shanthi" Ranganathan. The comedian and TV star remembers that he entered the talent show as a stand up act, reading jokes straight from a book that he says heavily focused on mocking Irish people. The police took it seriously and got a full statement from me, then said they’d find this person and take action.

As Good As It Gets: Life Lessons from a Reluctant Adult is Romesh Ranganathan's hilarious and painfully accurate dissection of what it really means to grow up. An obvious one but it has to be emphasised how faithful Romesh has stayed to his hometown of Crawley.

I have the added bonus that he grew up in the same town as me so I know the clubs/pubs he refers to and we're the same generation, so probably even some bits that weren't funny made me laugh. In his Straight Outta Crawley book, the 42-year-old tells the story of the first gig he prepared for, held in a basement underneath a café. The on-screen Romesh – who lives above the pub with his wife (Car Share's Sian Gibson), young son, record collection and turntables – describes himself as "nominally Hindu". At a charity event a few years ago, the comedian and TV personality even revealed that he gets recognised in Crawley more for being a former Hazelwick teacher than he does for his many TV appearances. A former maths teacher, he is now known for his award-winning series The Misadventures of Romesh Ranganathan, his weekly topical show The Ranganation, his sitcom The Reluctant Landlord and the BAFTA nominated Asian Provocateur, which features Romesh's mum.
