His works are among Ghibli's least known films outside of Japan, including Only Yesterday, Pom Poko, and My Neighbors the Yamadas. They are The Borrowers Afield, The Borrowers Afloat, The Borrowers Aloft, and The Borrowers Avenged. Each film takes a chapter, and there is information about the studio's decisions and backroom details, followed by a detailed review of the resulting film. Similarly, his aesthetic finds a balance between traditional and modern visual languages, between the landscape painting of past centuries and surreal pictorial worlds, between the graphic stylization of traditional Japanese art and the radiant colorfulness of European impressionism.If you've seen a few Ghibli films, and would like to know more, then this isn't a bad place to start. Older readers coming to it might not get as much out of it as I did, but I still think it holds up and has a lot of interesting things to say about age and self confidence. She has written a wide range of children's books, including stories about a bear who is a doctor, a bed which becomes a tiger, and tales of an old sea captain.
