Whether they offer a moment of family bonding, comfort in difficult situations, or pesky temptations, the kitchen scenes are always of central importance in Studio Ghibli films. Airplanes are a recurring theme of the films because Hayao Miyazaki’s dad was the director of Miyazaki Airplanes, a manufacturer of fighter planes. The most recognizably Studio Ghibli recipe was the Herring and Pumpkin Pot Pie; everything else was just kind of generic food. I’m an East Asian NB graphic designer and freelance artist based in the US, and this is my 10th official zine as a mod (yay). This book did not offer the art or lore and merely provided a slight nod to various stories of Studio Ghibli ahead of each recipe.
That being said, I’m super excited to learn, work, and share the love of Ghibli films and food with everyone! Many are from Disney, Netflix and Shout Factory, so they feature movies, TV series and characters that your kids already know and love. Despite Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind being archived with other famous Studio Ghibli films, it was produced a year before the Japanese studio was established. In 1996, The Walt Disney Company and the Tokuma Shoten Publishing Company, which controls Studio Ghibli, formed a partnership, making Disney the sole international distributor of the world-renowned animated films.
The format gives a quick review and synopsis of the film related to each recipe with a pic of the movie poster/cover. For example, in Spirited Away, Chihiro is shown eating a red bean bao, symbolizing comfort and a sense of belonging that accompanies going back home. LACQUERED BOWL: Fine tableware is common in a Japanese kitchen, so I highly suggest investing in at least one lacquered bowl with a dome lid for soups (especially since this was featured in Ponyo). Most of the included recipes are very simple things that I think most cooks probably already know or have encountered elsewhere with more interesting twists or additions. Ghibli films have had always a special place in my heart, and I’m excited to work on this project with all our potential contributors. White miso, which is milder, sweeter and made with a higher proportion of rice, is used for sauces and light miso soups.
