It could be a good family read-aloud since it could appeal to the whole family, although I personally hesitate to recommend bedtime due to the the subject matter! Some of the stories here are famous ones – Ernest Shackleton, Hugh Glass (aka Leo DiCaprio in “The Revenant”), Aron Ralston (aka James Franco in “127 Hours”), etc. Parents should be aware of and prepared to discuss topics such as witnessing friends/family dying, killing/eating dogs for survival, attempted suicide, plane crashes, hypothermia and starvation. An incredibly positive and inspiring book that challenges children to think about what makes people successful. When teenager Brian escapes from a crashed plane, he finds himself in the harsh Canadian wilderness with only a hatchet to help him.
