About this deal

I am an experienced KS2 teacher, Reading SATs marker and KS2 Writing moderator and I have produced all of the resources provided using my knowledge and expertise. This is a 15-session Literary Leaf for Tamarind and the Star of Ishtaby Jasbinder Bilan which covers all aspects of the Lower Key Stage 2 content domains. But when her father remarries, Tamarind is sent to India to stay with the family she has never met, in their atmospheric ancestral home—a huge mansion high in the Himalaya mountains. Jasbinder Bilan was born in a stable in the foothills of the Himalayas that had been in her family for generations. In 2017, something very exciting happened - I entered The Times/Chicken House Children's Fiction Award with my story Song Of The Mountain and won!

Taking refuge in the lush gardens one moon-lit night, she follows a friendly monkey to find an abandoned hut and a glowing star ring, and meets Ishta, a mysterious mountain girl. Orphaned as little girl, she has been taken care of by Aunt, whose temper is as stormy as the weather. The story is very touching, but even more affecting is Bilan’s gorgeous prose, which evokes a world full of wonder, glitter and light.

The story follows eleven-year old Asha, who is empoweredwith spiritual connections to her grandmother, as she journeys through the wildand dangerous Himalayas with her best friend Jeevan. So when she arrives at her ancestral home, a huge mansion in the Himalayas surrounded by luxuriant gardens, she’s full of questions for her extended family.
