He made me do 42 vocal takes at one point, with the encouragement ‘I know there’s something in there'.

Tape Deck Heart isn’t as immediate as England Keep My Bones, but it’s just as good (and might even be better, although I haven’t decided for sure yet). It's rarely a surprise when hardcore punk dudes turn out to be acoustic boys at heart, but few are as sure-handed as former Million Dead singer Frank Turner. Anyone who has had the pleasure of seeing Jalen perform live knows that he is one of the most captivating performers on today's soul scene. But when I read stuff like that, honestly, I can’t help but be just a little bit sad because to me, Frank’s music is the truth, or as close to the truth as I’ve heard.

Over the last few months he has disarmed packed rooms of rowdy concert goers, leaving them silent as they hold fast to every syllable sung. Now with a massively successful US tour opening for sweet soul darlings Thee Sacred Souls behind him, 2023 is sure to be a propitious year for Daptone's newest signee. Furthermore, it was his first album recorded in full collaboration with The Sleeping Souls, and they were clearly still finding the rhythm as a band. A routinely great artist, much of Sufjan's universal appeal comes from his skills as a gifted narrator, pairing personal musings on love and devotion with commentary on American culture, whilst welding folk and electronica, the ambient and existential.
