When threatening notes are found at the house and tires are slashed, the family wonders who might also know their precious secrets.

The Birdcage - Penguin Books UK

The house, Rock Point is at the centre of the story, it’s the key and you see it in all its faded glory. Eve Chase took me to an isolated manor in windswept Cornwall, where I turned the pages faster and faster to see if the three sisters could put the past - and past grievances - behind them.

In black and gold and a bright arsenic green, this is undeniably one of the best-looking books about true crime to ever grace my desk. The dual timelines narration synchronizes perfectly in harmony, and the switching of the perspectives will keep you reading to the last page.

The Birdcage by Eve Chase | Waterstones

Eve Chase is the internationally bestselling author of Black Rabbit Hall, The Wildling Sisters,The Daughters of Foxcote Manor and the pseudonym of journalist and novelist Polly Williams. I love Bertha, the talking African grey parrot, owner of one of the birdcages of the title (Berthington Palace) who interjects herself magnificently into the storyline. In the 21st century, it’s rare, if not impossible, to find a book that delivers a genuine Gothic mystery, Eva Chase’s, The Black Rabbit Hall does. It’s only when all the pieces are put together that the sisters – and the reader – find out what actually happened. The Birdcage is a story about family, love, and betrayal that will stay with readers long after they finish the last page. The temperature will drop and, if we’re lucky, we’ll see the moon’s shadow racing towards us from the west, nine hundred meters a second. This is one of those thrillers that doesn’t rely on depravity to propel the plot, but turns its canny eye on how our all-too-human weaknesses can set off terrible consequences, and how love and compassion can heal and help us all become better people. The Glass House by Eva Chase is highly recommended for readers who enjoy reading historical family dramas with dark secrets and many skeletons in the closets. The book sets you on edge from the start, but takes too long to get to the mystery of what happened in 1999.

But over the next few summers, the three girls would build their own tumultuous ties, till the day of the eclipse changed everything.Lauren always felt left out as the other two sisters were there first - she didn't meet them until she was nine years old. Right away, we are made aware of something terrible that has affected the lives of everyone connected to Rock Point, so much that for, 20 years none of them have managed to step back into the place again. The story rotates through the points of view of the three sisters, who are all well-developed characters, each with her own "voice" and outlook, which adds a nice depth to the tale. In Charles, the author gives us a portrait of a mercurial, rather self-obsessed artist who pours his energy into making art rather than sustaining relationships. This book started off very slow due to little dialogue and just the inner thoughts of the characters.
