About this deal

Just because a book is listed on Bookshelves, does not mean it is available through the Review Team.

Unfortunately, I loathed the main character and could not get past the ridiculous decisions she made. Since I had not read anything about the book or the inside cover, I was in suspense as to what kind of story I had actually picked up. Coming from a dysfunctional family, - emotionally neglected by an incompetent mother - , she ran away from home at seventeen, straight in the arms of Matt. She studied Film at university, and in her twenties and early thirties worked in TV and post-production before turning her attention to her true writing. This is where Cassandra comes in: glamorous and confident, you think she is the ideal friend for Annabelle.

I Capture the Castle is the first novel of English author Dodie Smith, written during the Second World War when she and her husband Alec Beesley, an English conscientious objector, moved to California. Rose decides that she really is taken with Simon, and Cassandra and Topaz scheme to get Simon to propose to her. A Londoner of proud Italian and Greek heritage, Sophia Spiers grew up on the Lisson Green Council Estate, which informed the depiction of her protagonist’s childhood. Thanks to Random Things Tours and the author for an opportunity to read this book in exchange for my review. This thriller is well-written, covering dark themes, such as self-harm, trust issues and manipulation, as well as the potential dangers of hypnosis and the complexities of the human mind.

Dose talk about senstive issues self harm which Annabelle has yo deal with but it is written really well in the book. The book is well written, especially for a debut, and I'd be interested in reading future works by this author. A chilling thriller, it is full of twists, suspense, and tension and is addictive, making it the perfect psychological thriller.

My kindle is my life but I also have a substantial bookshelf in my cosy reading room where I can go to escape the stresses of family life with plenty of tea and chocolate. After Disney released the film rights to the novel in the late 1990s, Heidi Thomas wrote a screen adaptation.

I also found the scenes that describe the hypnosis sessions to be vividly realistic and at times I felt like I was going under with Annabelle.

Annabelle, the main character, frustrated me with her unreliability, yet I found myself rooting for her as she struggled with self-esteem and paranoia. Unfortunately, I just couldn’t get into this book, I found it slow-moving and I didn’t really like the characters or relate to any of them. I will read almost anything but my preferred genres to review are psychological thrillers, crime procedural novels or women's fiction. The book starts with mystery and has a dark and gloomy vibe to it from the first page right up until the very end.
