About this deal

A human secret society is at the root of evil, including the attempted murder of the child protagonist, Nobody Owens, in The Graveyard Book. With actors Laurie Brown and Veronica Leer leading the way, the audience ventures through the theatre's corridors and cubbyholes in an effort to track down the missing parent. It is also available in Hebrew, Spanish, [2] [3] French, [4] Italian, [5] Croatian, [6] and Portuguese. McKean decides to forego cute-and-cuddly or staidly-generic illustrative styles in favor of a primitive linework and collage method that -- for the most part -- perfectly supports the oddball nature of the story. After selected performances of this National Theatre of Scotland production, the young audience gets to relive the fun.I hope some of you reading this review decides to also read Neil Gaiman's THE DAY I SWAPPED MY DAD FOR TWO GOLDFISH and then perhaps to gift a copy (if you had purchased it) to a child you love, or at least to a library or an organization that distributes books to children! Knowing that we had company in the dark certainly helped our reading group face the things that continue to terrify us.

I wouldn't have thought that another book, even by the same author/illustrator team, could be as wacky and unique and different and interesting as The Wolves in the Walls, but Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean have proved me wrong! Chosen as one of Newsweek magazine's best children's books of the year, The Day I Swapped My Dad for Two Goldfish is the sort of picture book that works for readers of all ages.

Also, I have to give a huge positive shout-out for artist McKean's gorgeous, colorful visual renditions of Gaiman's imagined story, making it even more hilarious and a joy to read. Because the study illuminates how readers identify through story and bring this understanding to their real world relationships, there are also valuable resonances here for scholars investigating literacy studies, library studies, teacher education, curriculum studies, identity formation, memory work, intergenerational relationships, and the study of young people’s texts and cultures. First, it helps the child protagonist outgrow dependence on the parents and, often in rebellion to them, begin to move toward emotional and psychological independence. The idea of swapping a not very interesting Dad for two goldfish might seem absolutely absurd to an adult, but it’s perfectly normal and makes all the sense in the world to a kid.
