Description

I had assumed the book would be just about the Earl's Egyptology work, but it was a full account of his life, giving an eye-opening view of how a rich English aristocrat lived. I’ll sum it up for you, he had a completely ordinary life for someone of his time and social station.

The Earl and the Pharaoh: from the Real Castle Guided Tours. The Earl and the Pharaoh: from the Real

Fortunately, the Earl had many and varied interests, so his life is interesting and tells us much about that period in history.

Later appearances by Dr Johnny in Egypt as medic to the Earl and Almina are well enough drawn, but when the Earl was on his death bed at the Continental Hotel, Cairo in March-April 1923, being tended by Almina – and in the arms of Morpheus- Johnny was still in England and could not have comforted Lady Evelyn, as stated. Discovered on a Manhattan street in 2020 and introduced on Stanton’s Humans of New York Instagram page, Johnson, then 76, shares her dynamic history as a “fiercely independent” Black burlesque dancer who used the stage name Tanqueray and became a celebrated fixture in midtown adult theaters. The story of the 5th Earl of Carnarvon is much more than one man on a quest to find a missing pharaoh. The manipulative Mr Alfred acquired a ready made family that this allowed him to hide his secret world from scrutiny. Carnarvon’s life makes a good story, with plenty of Downton-esque period details – sometimes rather too many, in fact.

However, we get a lot of information on the 4th Earl of Carnarvon (Henry Herbert, Porchey's father), and then later Henry's second wife, and Porchey's siblings. I can only assume that Porchey is the 5th Earl, as his first name is not mentioned in the family tree, just their 4th, 5th earl titles. I enjoyed the time the author spent sharing about how Highclere castle participated in the war effort.Drawing on Highclere Castle’s never-before-plumbed archives, bestselling author Fiona, the Countess of Carnarvon, charts the twists of luck and tragedies that shaped Carnarvon’s life; his restless and enquiring mind that drove him to travel to escape conventional society life in Edwardian Britain. Changes in tax laws deprived the ultra rich of the resources to sustain large estates and take on bold new projects and technologies. Other times, the author would switch to someone’s title and without explaining whose title it is, so you have no idea who she is talking about.

There are so many people mentioned in each chapter with no introduction or explanation about who they are. The narrative may interest amateur Egyptologists, but the text is another addition to a long line of the author’s celebrations of her wealthy, influential descendants—e. In her hotly anticipated memoir, the author traces the challenges and triumphs of her upbringing in New Jersey and the work (including a stint as an intern with Sen.An enjoyable book that describes a life lived to the full by one of the super rich of the early 20th century. Inside the tomb, the explorers found King Tut’s sarcophagus and a treasure trove of astonishing artifacts: chariots and model boats, board games and paintings, a coffin made of pure gold. Lynch was a famous Egyptophile, with his own Mummy in situ, an author and explorer who fired up Carnarvon’s passion for the chance of cashing in on finding undiscovered Royal Tombs in the Valley of the Kings. It charts the twists of luck and tragedies that shaped Carnarvon’s life; his restless and enquiring mind that drove him to travel to escape conventional society life in Edwardian Britain. It was Lord Carnarvon who held the concession to excavate and whose passion and ability to finance the project allowed the eventual discovery to take place.

The lights dimmed all over the city; the earl’s dog, who was sleeping in the housekeeper’s room back at Highclere, gave a howl and dropped dead; and the legend of the Curse of King Tut was born.He was raised to love hunting and horse racing, and he was more interested in socializing and gambling than academics while a student at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge. Am skipping now to chapter 15, The Mummified Cat which at least hints at a start to address the topic it suggests is the reason for publication.
