It's completely over-the-top and overuses tropes of the genre like warm colors lighting, romantic music, long stares and pretty birds making Harley looks like a Disney princess, making blindingly obvious how much of a parody the whole thing is. Every girl in my school who wants to see what it's like to kiss a girl knows (1) I'm super gay and (2) I won't try to date them afterwards. I hated Dad for being so weak, for betraying Mum like that, for hopping into bed with the first replacement he could find, like you could just swap one woman out for another if she didn’t suit you any more.

Occasionally, the rest of Team Epic Reads will let me take things over to espouse my love for one of our books (see Exhibit A and Exhibit B), though I suspect it’s just a way to get me to stop yelling at them about my feelings.

With Kyary Pamyu Pamyu's "PONPONPON" playing on the soundtrack, we see Kumiko and Comic Book Guy on a picnic listening to a Cosmic Wars: The Crucifixion of Jim Jam Bonks audiobook, visiting the Springfield Air and Space Museum (during which Comic Book Guy accidentally pushes a decommissioned Space Shuttle out of the window), and cosplaying at the Bi-Mon Sci-fi Con (with Comic Book Guy as the title portal from Stargate and Kumiko using said portal to change from a Sailor Scout costume to a Hogwarts uniform; the audience includes Milo and a heavily pregnant Strawberry).

Soon after turned on its head when she re-envisions the entire thing but with Markus as a slimy, creepy douchebag. It's your heart, it's soft and mushy and it's supposed to be and I'm sorry he thought it was okay to mess with it but that's his mistake, not yours. Our kitchen was bright and cosy with a wonky spice rack on the wall and clutter on every surface, cookbooks with the pages stuck together with sauce, and crooked wooden cabinets that Granddad built because when we moved in here, we didn’t have money for things like redoing the kitchen. Wanting to shift the life out of someone was about as much as I could hope for if I went to the post-exam party, but it wasn't enough to get me out of my fluffy socks and sweatpants. Also, this is a YA novel; Saoirse’s actions were very befitting of a teenager and they did fuel points of the plot. Ruby, who is only visiting family for the summer, proposes a falling in love montage: they do everything in her favourite romantic comedies, all the dates and picture perfect moments, up until the dramatic break up and inevitable making up at the end. I'm hoping if I go to all this effort you'll look at me and think, well, she might be a dumbass but she tries. Once, about six weeks after the breakupocalypse, I was alone in our form classroom, eating a sandwich, when my ex-best friend, Izzy, walked into the room.

Smyth's love-flecked debut is a meet-cute drawn out in the style of Jenny Han's To All the Boys I Loved Before, and the moments are just as sweet and cinematic as YA rom-com fans will expect . It's all the things we used to do that we'd never do again and all the things we'd never do for the first time together. Faced with her mother’s early onset dementia, the possibility of her own diagnosis, the implosion of her friendships, and her dad’s new relationship Saoirse is dealing with so much.Madea's Family Reunion has this with Vanessa and Frankie, and an inversion with Lisa and her abusive husband Carlos showing him abusing her.

As long as we both get what we want, no strings, just good old-fashioned girl-on-girl kissing, then what's the problem? It turns out to be one-sided when it's revealed that Hans is the villain who was using her as part of his plan to become king of Arendelle, thus making it a Villain Song. If they were real, her mother would still be able to remember her name and not in a care home with early-onset dementia. While I cannot relate to what Saoirse is going through, her struggles and cynicism felt so relatable to me. This is played out as a parody while satirized by commentator Kyon in The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya's Non-Indicative First Episode, "The Adventures of Mikuru Asahina". Saoirse felt so relatable, the way she can push people away and when they leave it feels like you were right all along, the way she can hurt people with her words. They jump above the surface of sea, they create a heart shape with water, they have a Spaghetti Kiss and they watch bioluminescent jellyfish and look at each other lovingly.
