About this deal

One of those books you dip in and out of, but i did enjoy reading it and it took away some practical tips about drinking in moderation. If that’s the case then figure out which of the drinks, on any particular day, you’ll definitely enjoy and benefit from. I also enjoyed Adrian's personal stories which made this far less like a medical self help guide and more just about his own journey with Alcohol, which many should relate to. I would have given it more stars just for the enjoyment it brought but I'm conflicted about the whole thing.

The Good Drinker by Adrian Chiles | Waterstones

Very interesting book, non judgmental and he takes a pragmatic approach to being more mindful about drinking alcohol.

It gave me something to think about as someone who enjoys a drink or two but I’m aware from a health point of view I should cut down a bit without having to go teetotal. When I’m an old bloke, I want to be able to wander down to the pub, sit there, have a pint and a read of the paper and shamble home.

I chose not to lose the booze completely, says reformed

More generally though Chiles deserves a lot of praise for making what is effectively a self-help book a charming and enjoyable read, never pompous or preachy. He starts by discussing the basics of his approach, emotions and how to handle them, and our self-beliefs. Join the inimitable Chiles as he sets out around Britain and plumbs his only slightly fuzzy memories of a lifetime in pubs in a quest to find the good drinker within. I said if there was a party across the road now with 100 of my best friends in it, I wouldn’t be looking forward to it if I knew I wasn’t going to be allowed to have a drink there. He assures us "there are mountains of scientific studies on all this" and he has done "a fair amount of reading and listening on the subject".

As a radio presenter Adrian currently hosts Question Time Extra Time and Chiles on Friday, both on 5live.These adverts enable local businesses to get in front of their target audience – the local community. I've occasionally been asked why it is that I need to go for a drink before watching the Albion play. Also considering the situations where I tend to drink more than I’d like - such as at events where I don’t know people, or with particular groups of friends and having a plan to enjoy the drinks I enjoy and stop when i need to has been great. On one hand I loved this as it was a comfort to hear how much Chiles has drunk throughout his life because it’s more than me! He says: “A game-changer is draught alcohol-free beer in pubs because it’s got equal standing to other beers.

The Good Drinker by Adrian Chiles | Hachette UK The Good Drinker by Adrian Chiles | Hachette UK

Full of practical tips to step back from our ‘battle with the bottle’ while still being able to enjoy a drink in moderation. His book takes a Jungian psychology approach to addictions and drinking, with five universal archetypes as the thread through his take on the topic. The popular broadcaster and columnist sets out to discover the unsung pleasures of drinking in moderation.

Note: We will be hosting Adrian at our Tasting Room in early 2023, where Laura will discuss the book with him. Adrian is aware of the blurry - no pun intended - lines between binge drinking, psychological dependency and physical addiction, which destroys lives. Not the self-help, new-age, ‘diseased abstinence’ preachy nonsense that’s often presented in alcohol reduction literature, just an honest guy’s experience and advice that actually works.
