It’s just something to be aware of going into the book that the story spends a substantial amount of time on that issue. From a slow and purposeful narrative, to an overly dramatic and rushed ending, it’s almost as if the author crammed two completely different books together. for we few, the sturdy, the strong, the dreamers, alaska is home, always and forever, the song you hear when the world is still and quiet. To top it off, the locals (while friendly and helpful) are gravely serious about the need for the family to toughen up and get used to the harsh reality of living there.

It’s evenly paced and delivers a steady stream of emotional ups and downs as the Allbrights navigate this new territory and their new lives. There are, however, aspects of the novel that don't live up to the quality of the author's writing in my opinion. Earliest comments described it aptly: an engaging, fascinating and well-paced first half gives way to a tedious, predictable middle and end. Sometimes she woke up to her dad crying and her mama trying to soothe him, saying stuff like, Shhh, now, Ernt, it’s over now, you’re home safe.
