Description

The same is true for The Haar, but it stays interesting and smart enough to keep an academic entertained. You keep getting sucked out of the story by ham-fisted metaphors and very convenient simplistic short-cuts. There are just enough crazy supernatural deaths to keep you from falling asleep, and there’s the classic scene near the end where Susan’s breasts grow faces and rip someone’s guts out, but everything around these moments seem designed to make you not give a shit, and it is for this reason that I simply can’t recommend Mausoleum. What I liked: The story follows 80+ year old, Muriel McAuley, life long resident of the Scottish fishing town Witchaven.

I'm glad that I choose The HAAR because it is a little on the weird side, it's quite gory in parts, it's a lot of fun, and it's a surprisingly touching story about love and loss. is being forced out of their cottages and off their ancestral land by Big Bad American billionaire Patrick Grant. This book was so good, the main character is a wee Scottish granny, facing unwanted changes to her village, and you're rooting for her the whole way through. This self-published horror novel is set in Scotland and follows a Lovecraftian vein – elderly Muriel McAuley has lived in her remote Scottish fishing village all her life.

I’ve already loaded another David Sodergren book into my kindle—Maggie’s Grave—and can’t wait to get into it.

What started as an emotional story with creepy but melancholic atmosphere turned into an extremely strange horror romance and almost fetish porn. Sodergren fully embraces the DIY Self-Publishing model and the level/caliber of books he’s given us are second to none. While he has always had a knack for writing visceral and heart-pounding, there’s something that feels fundamentally different about The Haar, in the best ways possible. There are a few times we break from the mold to take a glimpse into the life of others like Arthur, Muriel’s close friend, or the guys who are working on the construction site. I have about 70 pages left, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to finish it due to my personal issues with topics like that.

At its core, The Haar is a preemptive revenge tale, as Muriel has not been kicked out of her home, but she will do anything in her power to make sure she does not get removed.
