Stone cites two examples of recent major synthetic histories to demonstrate this movement away from ideology, namely Christian Gerlach’s The Extermination of the European Jews and David Cesarani’s Final Solution, both from 2016. The most notorious took place in September 1941, where 33,771 Jews were killed in a single operation. Academic notes are very useful though the bibliography appears to be selective-it doesn't site Timothy Snyders work when the notes do. Reading his book, one becomes aware how the Holocaust was organised with the full knowledge and involvement of the German ministerial bureaucracy.

The Holocaust is a topic that we have become very familiar with although its ability to shock never lessens. In this lecture, drawing on his new book The Holocaust: An Unfinished History, Dan Stone will emphasise: the need to understand the significance of Nazism's genocidal ideology; that the commonly heard concept of "industrial genocide" gives only an incomplete representation of what happened; the fact that the genocide of the Jews required continent-wide collaboration; and the depth of the trauma engendered by the Holocaust. Sir, William Hague (Oct 31) correctly notes the dangers of the manipulative and persuasive capabilities of AI as a critical area for future regulation. The secret Pantcheff report is supposed to be locked up in British archives until 2045 but a copy was given to Russia and it has now been revealed from within Russian archives.

There were a couple of chapters that I found a bit difficult to understand the argument, however the summary chapter did a good job of linking the roots of beliefs and politics that led to the holocaust with the rise of some nationalist movements today. Premium Digital includes access to our premier business column, Lex, as well as 15 curated newsletters covering key business themes with original, in-depth reporting. Graham McKinley from the States of Alderney says: "A number of people are interested in the history of Alderney and getting to the truth, so this is a remarkable document.Germany publicly prostrated itself for its historical crimes but, by its owning the responsibility, the actions of non-Germans could be hidden. Large numbers of people in occupied Ukraine, Lithuania, Latvia and elsewhere took part in or facilitated the killing. Romania deported many Jews on its own initiative to Transnistria in the autumn of 1941, dumping them there in makeshift camps and leaving them to fend for themselves – in pigsties, for instance – and to die in their tens of thousands.

My new book The Holocaust: An Unfinished History seeks to rectify this situation and to emphasise the extent of non-German collaboration in the Shoah. In reality, as the book makes clear, such “industrial genocide” was accompanied by “huge numbers of Jews [who] were shot in face-to-face killings reminiscent of colonial massacres, albeit on a vast scale” or “in ghettos, where they were starved to death”.Nationalists in post-communist eastern Europe have understandably emphasised the appalling atrocities committed by the Soviet Union.

Both of the scale of death which Marcus Roberts believes adds up to many thousands of Eastern Europeans but also hundreds of Jewish prisoners too. In his new book, The Holocaust: An Unfinished History, Dan Stone’s proposition is, to some extent, that we have failed.British citizens were among more than 400 people who left Gaza via Rafah today, the first time the crossing had been opened for.
