About this deal

But as shadows of intolerance grow, how far will one family go to hold onto their beliefs and each other? In my school years, I had read or heard of the Huguenots being expelled from France sometime before the American revolution, but had only a very vague idea of what that entailed. Others may draw more from it than I and for that reason, if this is a period in history that appeals to you go on dive in you may not agree with my critique! That said this is a personal opinion and as such, I perhaps prefer to be more invested in my characters than the author could manage for me. Jeanne works her way across Europe learning to both spin fabric and weave cloth to support her journey.

The Huguenot Chronicles, Books 1 - 3: Merchants of Virtue

Will William of Orange conquer his wife’s Catholic father, King James II, and become the new King of England? The author does more than bring the period brilliantly to life, however; he creates characters based on real historical figures who would rather risk their lives, status and fortune than surrender their values and beliefs.

A little long and repetitions in spots but certainly touches upon many major events and describes major cities of the times. Thirdly, the focus was on the story and one family’s flight from persecution and their trials and tribulations along the way. Each is involved in one adventure after another, from sailing across the Atlantic under the worst possible conditions to trying to survive, alone and with only the support of their wits and church, in England. A period of time I know about from my Protestant Northern Ireland ancestry, and great to see my birthplace get a mention in later chapters of the 3rd book; however, I had no idea of the perspective of the French Protestants persecution.

Without them we wouldn't have had such defenders of democracy as George Washington, Alexander Hamilton and Winston Churchill who all had Huguenot blood! Some military action, quite a few periods of danger and tribulation for this family of staunch French Huguenot Protestants that refuse to deny their faith for the sake of retaining wealth and property, and even possibly their very lives.A little more of this kind of thing, spread around, would have made these people a little more "real", so to speak. My problem with this book, if "problem" is the right word is that for me the book has no story that could be considered tangible, merely following the lives of several characters through the lives they are forced to lead, their journey had no objective, no passion and no end, futile, and aimless I felt the author was unable to express the anguish of those that were Huguenot and having to endure the miseries forced upon them with the characters being just that people, who the reader I suggest finds hard to emotionally invest in and as such for me the whole story fails. Jacob, having managed to escape from the cruel Caribbean pirates, has been asked to join other Huguenot settlers founding New Rochelle outside the burgeoning city of New York.
