Description

There was rarely anything new in life, she thought—but it was not just human failings that repeated themselves: so too did those things that were positive. Mma Potokwane, who runs the orphan farm and is Mma Ramotswe’s closest friend, reflects on the squabble over the old man’s will. His works have been translated into more than forty languages and have been best sellers throughout the world….

In this story Mma Precious Ramotswe makes incorrect assumptions about several people and then learns she is incorrect. Ladies’ Detective Agency series, Mma Ramotswe is tempted to put the brakes on a business venture before it even gets rolling. By using the Web site, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agreed to be bound by the Terms and Conditions. Grace believes that food is the source of men's happiness, while Precious takes a more nuanced view: men are not so different from women, they want to be loved and needed, too. And, in a further troubling sub-plot, is there anything Mma Ramotswe can do about the rumour that another wealthy local family are using vulnerable children as slave labour? After all, she herself is not beyond a little trickery - especially when it comes to righting wrongs and seeing justice served, or when innocent lives are at stake. Whenever Mma Ramotswe is worried, she visits her old friend Mma Potokwane - the director of the Gabarone orphan farm - for advice.

It’s unusual for an English-language series to be set in Botswana, or at least, it was when this one began. I also appreciate the depth of respect for working people that shines out of every book in this series. While there, Precious is disturbed by what she learns about one of the newest orphans: there is a suggestion that a well-off family is engaging in a practice long out-lawed. These include the new business plans of Mma Ramotswe's husband; modern day slavery; an imperiled inheritance; and more. Baboloki Mophephu, who suspects that his elderly father’s nurse has manipulated his father into leaving her his house in his will.Even as she puzzles over mysteries on the domestic front, Mma Ramotswe’s professional duties must take precedence.

Mr JLB Matekoni, husband of Number One Ladies’ Detective agency proprietor Mma Precious Ramotswe, is feeling uncertain about the future of his business, leading to a possible risky course of action. THE JOY AND LIGHT BUS COMPANY was available as an ebook from my library and I decided to see if anything had changed. When at a business seminar, hearing about "networking" (<- about which he is clueless) he is worried that there may not be time to eat lunch.
