Like James Herbert or Stephen King, Hawkins is able to give a short but intensive character portrait and history making the worlds of his human characters as rich as that the Pelapi.After a few chapters, it starts to make more sense and you realize that the middle of the story really is the beginning of Carolyn’s journey. When lightning flashed again, Carolyn stared into the lifeless eye of Isha,spitted with her fawn at the end of David’s spear.

Ifshe angled her head just so, she had an unobstructed view down the hillto the clearing of the bull. The look in his eyes as he climbed inside the bull brought to mind another Atul phrase, “wazin nyata,” which was the moment when the last hope dies. It crossed my mind that these fish-out-of-water tribesmen might have words in their language for thinking about reality, manipulating reality, in ways that look an awful lot like magic to modern eyes. You know nothing about the children except that they were smashed and spitted, torn to pieces, killed and killed, so that nothing so noble as love, or forgiveness, could ever claim space in them. Ultimately, this is a novel about what our damage does to us and what it makes us do, how hate binds as strongly as love, and how trauma becomes, by force of habit, a systematic practice.When we are introduced to a couple of characters from the real world, both Hawkins strengths and weaknesses begin to show. I am looking forward to seeing what others think about this since it is so different than anything I have ever read.
