The plot was all over the place and was just full of bad ideas that people in real life never would have done.

Q and A | Lucinda Riley Q and A | Lucinda Riley

Shortly before the publication of The Missing Sister , Lucinda announced an eighth and final book in The Seven Sisters series, promising to answer the question at the heart of the story: Who is Pa Salt? The use of the journal found in the present to bridge the gap to the past was such an excellent way to move the story back and forth in time. After being spotted in a ballet class there by a television director, she was cast as Dora, one of the Bastable children, in a 1982 BBC serialisation of E Nesbit’s children’s novel The Story of the Treasure Seekers.A story of love, sacrifice, courage, family, heritage, bravery courage and heritage, The Missing Sister is another consuming story from the much-loved Irish author. I, also, understand Riley’s desire to include bits of each sisters stories, however, it came off confusing and seemingly a desperate attempt to give each sister ‘facetime’ by concocting unrealistic scenarios. Then – with settings ranging from the Beatrix Potter-era Lake District, London Edwardian society and the Scottish Highlands, to Thailand, Australia, Spain, South America, New York and Kenya – came The Shadow Sister (2016), The Pearl Sister (2017), The Moon Sister (2018) and The Sun Sister (2019). We don't learn anything outside of Mary's childhood and even that story is not completed, because we still don't know her true identity.

I am good with reading a long book, but this one contained a lot of unnecessary fluff and definitely could have been shortened. I’ve loved the Seven Sisters from the get-go and this latest in the series is just as great as the rest . When Georg realizes that Mary, and therefore the ring, is not on board for their cruise, he is extremely agitated and goes to seek Mary out to persuade her to join them, and gives her the envelope Pa Salt left for her with the letter explaining where she can find answers. in all of Pan Macmillan’s largest English language markets in its first week of publication, seeing fans queuing around the block in some territories to get their copies. It is very difficult to say goodbye to them…but I hope to announce soon the plans to make a TV series of The Seven Sisters which will keep my sisters very much ‘front of mind’ for many more years to come. I discovered that so much history was not written down and just passed down the generations orally, particularly local history from a female perspective. I could feel how she as a character had changed throughout her journey, and how her relationship to her sisters had changed too. Once they have managed to make contact and assure her that they don't mean her harm, she still wants nothing to do with them. The tumultuous times of revolution for the Irish people as they fought for their freedom were informative and interesting. As CeCe is in Australia, she is sent to meet the suspected "missing sister" and see if she has the ring. Again, it is a pity because the story in itself is so beautiful, charming, the characters are lovable, but they all speak in that melliflous tone of voice, repeating the same concept over the over. Again, I get why Riley wanted to include bits of past novels, however, each sisters story was intricate and involved multiple characters, this inclusion ended up adding to an already extensive list of characters to muddle through and keep straight.

Turning to writing, still as Lucinda Edmonds, she followed Lovers and Players with novels such as Hidden Beauty (1993), Enchanted (1994), Losing You (1997) and Playing with Fire (1998). Very excited that some light has been shed and that there will be another book, depressed that I have to wait God knows how long to get the answers we’re all so desperate to get. This latest book, The Missing Sister, is installment 7 in the series, and I find that with each subsequent book, I have fallen more in love with not only the D’Apliese family, but also with Lucinda’s writing.Lucinda Riley was born in Northern Ireland, and after an early career as an actress in film, theatre and television, wrote her first book aged twenty-four. The moment you realize that you can not do it justice with what you have, THAT is the moment to announce that there will be one more, NOT when the reader has already finished what you stated would be the last book.
