About this deal

The craft and detail of drawings is fantastic, but the diseases and deformations so grotesque and monstrous you get sick to your stomach almost immediately. Barnett illuminates the fears and obsessions of a society gripped by disease, yet slowly coming to understand and combat it. The dark secret love of the worm is actually the path of destruction of the innocence and beauty of the rose. Both worm and rose are personified, and the poem is heavy with sexual suggestion—leading many critics to theorize that the poem depicts the oppression of sexuality and desire by the Christian authorities of the day. The symbols within ‘The Sick Rose’are very important, as are the ways Blake describes these symbols.

In ‘On Imitation’, published in The Examiner in 1817, he turned his own penetratinggaze to the subject of anatomical illustration: The_Sick_Rose_1_256. This book, suited for a any medical student or professional, or those simply with an interest in the body and what happens when it fails, is a read that is quick, informative and highly engaging. Love is normally associated with life, but here as the love is ‘dark’ and ‘secret’ it brings destruction for the rose. But his imagery and symbolism are often dense and complex, requiring deeper analysis to penetrate and unravel their manifold meanings.Once considered mad for his idiosyncratic views, Blake is highly regarded today for his expressiveness and creativity, and the philosophical and mystical currents that underlie his work. Incorporating historic maps, pioneering charts and contemporary case notes, Richard Barnett's evocative overview reveals the fears and obsessions of an era gripped by epidemics. I reserve my 5 stars for my “favourite books of all time” but there is truly nothing wrong with this one.

There is a real sense of danger and dread in these lines that only builds as the poem progresses and Blake makes use of enjambment. It really illustrates how little the general populace, and all of humanity, understood (udderstood) disease.

For a later generation, notably the Brussels-born peripatetic Andreas vesalius, galen’s injunction that all anatomists should make their own observations led them to challenge his own descriptions of human anatomy (which seem to have been taken from studies of apes and pigs). While good or virtue is indicated by ‘bed of crimson joy’, evil is indicated by a number of words, like ‘sick’, ‘worm’, ‘night’, ‘storm’, ‘dark’, ‘secret’, ‘destroy’ etc. Interrupting the natural course of a disease, trying to outstrip the body’s own powers of healing, might itself be fatal. If you’re the kind of person who guiltily sneaks off to watch a zit popping or a deworming video on YouTube, wondering what’s wrong with you, this is the book for you.The colour's are soft and faint but in a way that highlights the softness of the flesh compared to the hardness of sickness and infection.
