What most fans don't know is that when a producer of the new film who worked with Carpenter on the original told Carpenter that a prequel was in the works, he wished them well and was happy that someone deemed his nearly 30-year-old movie worth revisiting. Universal brings The Thing to the UHD format with several extras that were not included on the 2008 Blu-ray.

Black levels are nice and inky giving the image a notable sense of depth and dimension at all times.Universal has released Director John Carpenter's cult classic 1982 Horror film 'The Thing' to the UHD format. The most notable effect is the rotors of the helicopters sitting nicely in the height channels while the chop coming off the blades kicks the side channels. The film could have easily been taken to a sequel, but only if it had done better at the box office. Inside, we have two essays, Some Thing Wicked This Way Comes by Violet Lucca, and In Defense of John Carpenter's The Thing by Kevin Alexander Boon. The slipcase is pretty neat, but it features Universal's tradition thick blue header with the Blu-ray logo and the words "Watch it anytime, anywhere!

Primary audio on the 4K disc is presented in a new English DTS:X object-based lossless mix that’s certainly a step above the previous Blu-ray’s 5.

We got an early preview of what this disc could be when digital streaming services like VUDU and iTunes upgraded to 4K HDR, but this disc offers much better black level balance without the troublesome bitrate caps those services push their product through. It's an all-around good time that, despite being new, has the feel and tone of the horror movies of old. The score sweeps you into the proceedings, and the surrounds keep you there, and whilst it's still a dated production that won't ever be able to escape the inherent limitations of its vintage, it's doubtful that The Thing will ever sound better than it does now.
