About this deal

Finding this record triggers a chain of events culminating in our hero learning the true fate of the singer Valerian, who died under equivocal circumstances just after – or was it just before? I don’t know if I’ll jump into Agatha Christie and Ayelet Waldman right away, but I’m certainly excited to read the next Vinyl Detective.

You see, when I first sat down and started writing the Vinyl Detective books back around 2011 I googled the phrase ‘Vinyl Detective’ and it was nowhere to be seen. So, if you are looking for an entertaining detective story with a slightly different vibe then Low Action might just be for you. Although there are only so many times in one series you can have a person in a band suspected of killing off the others. Finding this record triggers a chain of events culminating in our hero learning the true fate of the singer of Valerian, who died under equivocal circumstances just after or was it just before the abduction of her two-year-old son? On the one hand, it seems churlish to object to being given another helping of what has made the series so entertaining. There’s obviously a lot of you in there – do you populate your characters with bits of real people you know, parts of yourself? The chief delight, I thought, was the introduction of a certain older character known to one of our protagonists, very nicely done. The central character, still unnamed, is a record collector but has developed a sideline as an actual detective.

I also noticed a subtle nod to The Rivers of London Series by Ben Aaronovitch, when The Vinyl Detective and Tinkler head towards Beverley Brook on their way back to the car. The Vinyl Detective was scrounging a living in domestic bliss with his GF (Nevada) and their two cats (Turk and Fanny). And then there’s also the low hanging fruit principle — when it came to making up the world of the Vinyl Detective books it was easy and useful to use my local environment. The only person who isn't a suspect is Delia Lispector, the Blue Tit's bass player who has already been murdered.Tinkler, in particular, is an incredibly enjoyable and key figure in the series, is he based on a close mate? The possibility it could be curated by you had occurred, as there seem to be parts of the LJC's personality and dogged anonymity in the books' LP-collecting, hifi-credentialed protagonist. I enjoyed this latest Vinyl Detective story, I 'Liked it' but-for me-it didn't reach the heights of earliest instalments in the series. Andrew has also written a couple of books under the title, The Rupert Hood Spy Thrillers, as well as several Dr Who Novels, Novellas and comic books.

A novel based on the TV series The Prisoner came along as well ( Miss Freedom), and now you’re helming the Vinyl Detective series of mystery novels. With shades of the Sex Pistols (including their run in with Bill Grundy) it is punk's turn for the gentle parody. On the other hand, on occasion I found my thoughts drifting in other directions, to areas that are largely untouched.

Like clockwork, each chapter begins with a precisely-detailed scene and then plows right into the story. But the term ‘Vinyl Detective’ had already escaped into the wild, so to speak, and it sprouted up in several other places. Not because I didn’t want more Vinyl Detective, but more because I spent so much of my adolescence studying The World Wars, that anything to do with them immediately turns me off.
