It is no minor achievement that Beauman has managed to make these characters both real and approachable. It was probably quite accurate but it pretty much focused on snarky in-fighting between mothers at a school playground.

It charts their successes, their sorrows, and their world, making the book a unique historic record as well as an important part of the collection. My only negative comment would be about the cover; it says to me the pyramids mixed with some tropical island but I'm sure the publishers know what they are doing. It’s the unique insight into their family life away from the public eye that makes Chartwell’s Visitors Book the single most important record of the private life of the Churchills. The style reminds me a bit of some of my other favorite English authors (Phil Rickman and Sarah Rayne), but what makes this one so successful is the way that Beauman so seamlessly blends fact and fiction in bringing to life the discovery of King Tut’s tomb in Egypt.
