This baby girl has been abandoned but placed at the steps where she can be hopefully taken in and cared for. Of course there is a bit of romance along the way although Cadi is fiercely independent and doesn’t need a man, so will take a fair bit of persuasion to enter a relationship!

I have read other novels set in a similar time period with female protagonists working for the British government that had more danger, context and immersive qualities.This is my first book by Katie Flynn, I think I was expecting something different, a bit grittier in parts I guess, it was nice… even the events such as the bombing were written lightly. An entire generation is about to be affected by a great world war that may end up taking everything. But even though Nellie gave Lilac a step up in the world and it’s better than nothing, it does not mean that their situation is entirely advantageous.

I've never read a book by this author that I've not loved and could easily rate higher than five stars and this one is no exception. However, the plot became messy and small minor incidents became blown out of proportion into drama that divided many characters.
