About this deal

The reader is invited to join Jess as she tries to unravel the mystery of Hugh’s murder, with pages set aside for notes towards the end of the book and a QR code to scan for a summary of Jess’ investigations so far. I’ll admit it: I haven’t had my usual blogging frenzy in the past months and I’ve been feeling terribly uninspired.

But I still think this book is not bad, the murder story (which I came for) was brilliant and I enjoyed reading it. I really enjoyed the characters and both of their POV, was so intrigued by the whole mystery and entertained by this wild ride of a book, as a whole.Luckily, I had a few friends who had gone to boarding school, or worked in a boarding school, and were willing to let me pick their brains. At the prestigious Heybuckle boarding school, rich and influential Parents send their kids to attend and seemingly throw money at any drama they cause. I cannot go into details, because it would spoil some things, but just know that she has a great character development, and even if you don’t like her in the beginning, you’ll probably love her by the end. This interaction with the book made me completely forget whether my prediction was predictable or not.

I mostly read thrillers and mystery novels that deal with more adult themes, so the fact that I was instantly captivated by the synopsis of this YA mystery book was definitely a welcomed surprise.Night Mayor Franklefink has vanished from the Transylvanian Express - and it's up to you to solve the case! When Hugh’s long-term relationship with Queen Bee Millie erupts, he and Clem are finally an official item, much to the disgust of Jess who cannot understand what her friend sees in the spoilt trust-fund football star. There is something about the isolated setting and the fact that the main character/teen sleuth must know or at least know of the murderer that always gets me. And something I haven't seen so much of previously is the sense of gratitude from those without entitlement.

The writing in this one is absolutely incredible, the plot was easy to follow, the murderer is easy enough to guess but not too easy that it ruins the fun, the characters were well developed and relatable and overall this book is a really great read. The note pages were also a great addition and I think that more books should add this as it makes the whole experience really engaging; it feels like you also solved the murder! With time running out, Jess knows if she doesn’t solve this mystery she’ll finally have something in common with Hugh Henry. I guessed the murderer earlier on but was successfully sidetracked by the author until shortly before the ending.

This Book Kills is a fast-paced, absorbing read that cleverly intertwines the detective and boarding school story tropes. We are instantly introduced to this posh high-school, where Jess feels an instant disadvantage being “the scholarship girl”. The set-up for the murder, with the main character, Jess, writing a short story that is brought to life by the killer, came quite quickly after that.I absolutely adored the interactive element before the final reveal; it was so cool to turn the page and get to watch a video from the author them self giving you a recap of the clues. It's certainly not comic, this is after all a book about suspicion and murder, but just this sense that it doesn't take itself entirely seriously.
