About this deal

A 'book' was first used on the American version of the programme, which launched on US television in 1952.

I acquired that new, meaningless description for people who can neither sing nor dance nor juggle nor play the harp - a personality. Have a think, there may be old school friends that have fallen out of touch over the years but you know you/the recipient used to know, or even colleagues. The show was originally broadcast live, and over its run it has alternated between being broadcast on the BBC and on ITV.However, as each book is unique, you don’t have to include messages, you can just tell the story in your own words – this can be your story that tells your tale for future generations, or someone else’s story that you want to honour and remember. Although confident as a radio broadcaster, the idea of appearing on television had not thrilled him. The basic requirement is a good story, a varied story, and if you can add to that a pleasant, bubbling personality, then you have something else going.

The series never profiled serving politicians, although retired politicians were occasionally featured. With the approval of the Andrews family, the three editions of This Is Your Life which Eamonn had recorded before his death, were broadcast early in 1988. He was passionately interested in people, and his enthusiasm for the programme was as strong as ever. For many viewers, the start of each edition was made all the more exciting by the sight of Eamonn Andrews clutching the big red book under his arm and carefully, though not always successfully, concealing the subject's name until the moment of surprise! From the late 1970s on, these vinyl recordings were replaced by VHS, and later still DVD, and subjects would often receive both an unedited version and a broadcast version of their tribute. I often find that it is a good idea to create a separate section within the book for these sorts of things. The audition was successful, so at the age of 27 in 1950, Eamonn Andrews moved to London, secured himself an agent, and began a broadcasting career with the BBC that would last 14 years.
