He has a habit of reaching for an affirmation, especially a loving one, after saying something hard. They reunited in 2009, but lead singer Tony Hadley left in 2017 and it’s a subject Kemp doesn’t want to discuss today.

I thought the book was well written and gave some very interesting insights as to what was going on in the music scene during this time. I try to do the gym when I’m not working, which at the moment seems to be never, but when I do stop that’s the way I get some head space. The Spandau Ballet star’s new book is an “era-defining book on the creativity and culture of the eighties,” according to HarperNonFiction.Martin is one of the most recognisable faces of the 80s,” adds Ajda Vucicevic, publishing director at HarperNonFiction. Kemp will cover leading the New Romantics, his adventures with Spandau Ballet, the heady nights out at the Blitz, and Live Aid as well as many other memorable moments. Our arguments would sometimes turn into fights, but we were brothers, we knew that our love went beyond the fight and we would get it out of our systems. Thanks Martin , reading your book brought back some great memories and your band contributed to those . I plan to take you back to where it all began, when we were just kids having fun, when we knew that we were part of something bigger, and we also knew that life could never be the same again.

Because I was in the middle of it, on every drug possible coming into me, you fight to get to the other side. Martin Kemp will look back on his experiences during the 1980s in his new memoir ‘Ticket to the World’.Kemp was so celebrated for his appearance, earning a solo cover of the Face magazine, for instance, that he always felt he was “getting away with it” because of his looks. Well, this isn’t a full blown autobiography, just the band bits but it’s still a decent book for all that. Years ago, he and Shirlie discussed their parenting philosophy and agreed “to bring Harley and Roman up as if they were mates”. A very absorbing book especially if you like books detailing the ‘behind the scenes’ of bands and yet, there’s no ego in it like there is with a lot of similar books, no self-aggrandisement which makes a refreshing change.

In Hollywood, where they went on the back of The Krays, it was Gary who “hit a bit of a goldstream”, winning parts in The Bodyguard and Killing Zoe while Martin “was working in C-list movies. We were primarily a drinking band, working-class kids who were looking after one another all the time.

It was mainly singer envy,” he says (Kemp played bass, while Gary was guitar, synthesiser and backing vocals).
