Bruckheimer remains the blockbuster king [6], a veritable mini-studio in TV and features, but this was the start of his action era. I don't mean to imply that everything's perfect for everyone, or that today sucks, but it's a pretty good time and entertainment reflects a general, cultural mindset. Paramount's US 4K Blu-ray release of Top Gun beats the UK disc off the deck by a couple of weeks (now finally landing with an identical disc and the perfect companion piece in Days of Thunder 4K), delivering absolutely stunning native 4K video, complete with Dolby Vision enhancement, as well as a tremendous Dolby Atmos track and some nice new extras too.

Endlessly quotable and utterly iconic, Tony Scott's Tom Cruise-starring quintessential 80s aviation action thriller still stands up almost 35 years later. Worried that he may have lost his nerve, Mitchell is given a chance to redeem himself during a tense international crisis involving a crippled US vessel and a flock of predatory enemy planes.Music Videos (HD, 7 min) feature a pair of songs, starting with Lady Gaga performing "Hold My Hand" and the second with Onerepublic performing "I Ain't Worried.

I would say "never" because none of our main characters ever appear that way, but whenever an intentionally-out-of-focus extra crosses in the foreground -- think the bar scenes -- they look flat and tend to disrupt the shot / stereo effect. Ultimately, individual shots work great, but as a whole, the faster the cutting, even in non-action scenes like the elevator rendez-vous, the more I felt pushed out of the movie.Advisors, obviously, emphasize and talk about the technical details and accuracies — or inaccuracies — seen throughout the movie, giving fans some fascinating tidbits about reality versus fiction.

The unexpected sequel lands on Blu-ray with expected results, touching down with a spectacular, reference-quality 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 encode that is, hands down, the best disc of the year. The story wasn't new in 1986, but Top Gun scored with audiences on the strength of its visuals, especially the vertigo-inducing aerial sequences. The movie is coming to digital starting on August 23, with the physical 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray releases coming on November 1.At the time, it was thought of as the quintessential "guy" movie and celebration of the masculine archetype.

But I'm not sure the overall experience is enhanced, except that the movie now looks sometimes better in 3D than the aging 2D transfer (though the aging transfer does best the new version in places). I used to defend the first PQ rating, thinking some (here and elsewhere) were a little harsh on an aging film. Including, but not limited to, console and arcade video games, the pop-rock soundtrack, loads of other merchandise, and literal growth in the number of young people volunteering to be members of our armed services. Forever ranking with the best action films of all time,Top Gun remains a high-octane adrenaline rush certain to take your breath away.From my point of view, there were more impressive moments than failures, but as an overall experience, the 3D doesn't enhance the action. When hotshot fighter pilot Maverick is sent to the school, his reckless attitude and cocky demeanor put him at odds with the other pilots, especially the cool and collected Iceman. After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy's top aviators, Pete Mitchell is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him.
