You'll also find an Ethernet, a digital optical output and a USB port so you connect a multitude of devices. Its entirely healthy obsession with trying to give you the maximum 4K and HDR bang for your buck may well win it plenty of fans, though. The limited colour gamut still looks suitably punchy, but the poor tone-mapping with HDR10 does result in a tendency to clip some of the highlights.

One final strength of the 50UK3163DB’s pictures is that dark scenes aren’t impacted by any really distracting backlight blooming or general clouding inconsistencies. The panel is also a VA type rather than an IPS type, which again usually results in better contrast (albeit at the expense of comparatively limited viewing angles). As a result, you shouldn’t see any cables poking out of the side when viewing the TV from the front. I was able to pick out ample amounts of detail, from the thin lines decorating Joyce’s corduroy jacket and the wisps of smoke coming from her lips to the individual hairs atop Hopper’s head and the creases worrying his forehead. The services that are there are quick to load, easy to navigate and offer 4K, HDR10, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos where appropriate. The format’s dynamic metadata precisely maps the HDR to the display’s capabilities, producing images free of any clipping, with saturated but natural-looking colours. An inspection of the clouds in an episode of Selling Sunset showed they lacked some definition around the edges. Awarded the 4K HDR Ultra HD logo, all of Toshiba's HDR TV's have been proven to deliver and faithfully display 4K HDR content in all it's glory. However, that highlights the feeling the UK31 isn’t a notable step forward in the picture department.

Unfortunately, quite a few streaming services are missing from this TV's OS – so unless you have a Fire TV Stick or Chromecast you're not going to be able to watch all of them. The remote is my least favourite aspect of the TV mostly feature due to its size and smudge-prone keys. Using this menu you can discover and pair devices that use Bluetooth wireless technology, and start to use them with the TV. If you’re just looking to kick back and relax while watching everyday TV, you’ll be plenty happy with what you get. So, for instance, you become impressively aware of the light gleaming off individual drops of rain during HDR footage of torrential rainfall, or of sunlight catching the corners and curves of car bodywork. If wall-mounting is not a consideration (or feasible) there’s the stand to deal, which while easy to screw in, is surprisingly heavy and brings the TV’s profile down low. That said, the voices in the mid-range are packed with detail and the bass present in the soundtrack has a decent amount of weight to it. Other strengths include decent image detail, low input lag and an effective, Linux-based smart platform. Good-quality native 4K sources, especially 4K Blu-rays, look much richer in texture, clarity and depth than HD images do, despite the 50-inch screen being fairly small by today’s 4K standards. or Ultra HD) refers to the resolution of a TV’s display, which equates to the number of horizontal and vertical pixels that it can display.

Cycling back to Stranger Things, night-time scenes look particularly menacing with the lights off in Dolby Vision Dark, though I did wish the blacks would go deeper in the shadows. The Toshiba UK31 appears to use a VA panel, based on the limited viewing angles and native contrast ratio. If you really want to get an impression of HDR’s strengths without having to spend big on a much higher end TV, the 50UK3163DB won’t let you down. While the TV's interface is easy to navigate a major issue you'll notice out of the gate is that some key streaming apps are missing. After a rocky start when it relaunched in the UK under the custodianship of Turkish brand Vestel, Toshiba has hit upon a consistent run of form, the last few sets have been met with four-star reviews from this very site.
