So, it’s no wonder that appearing ageless has become one of the few ways women have to battle against a force that wants them to just ‘disappear’ (with the anti-ageing and cosmetic surgery industries only too happy to offer their services in exchange for our cash). Take the recent trend for more athletic-looking figures or a larger derriére (for which Black women and athletes have been scrutinised and derided). I wish I could tell myself that the difference I felt is a great thing because it gives me a very unique perspective. But it takes a lot of guile to swim upstream in a culture that promotes anti-ageing rhetoric like ‘ preventative Botox’ past the age of 25 as if it was a right of passage, like leaving home or learning to drive.

A beauty journalist by trade, you'd assume Anita Bhagwandas has thoroughly poked around every crevice of her chosen industry – and you'd be correct.I think that's what a lot of people are expected to do and it can feel quite jarring to see people who are so comfortable with themselves and not feel like that yourself and wonder why you don't. Part of this, I think, is that there’s more respect for older generations, which is a cultural norm across much of Asia.

It makes me sad and angry how we're, pardon my language, so fucked up in our heads and how that beauty pressure and anxiety take up so much place in women's lives. I remember when I started in the fashion and journalism industry, I felt that pretty much everyone was white. At every turn, we’re exhorted to externalise our self-esteem, from our toxic obsession with thinness to our fixation with female youth.Perhaps the biggest shift was learning why I’d reduced my self-worth to being entirely defined by how I look, and that made me realise how imperative it was to root my self-esteem elsewhere, in the qualities that really define me – my character and positive traits. MAC artistic director Terry Barber told me in a feature for Glamour: “Everyone is trying to look the same to fit into a social media and reality TV look.
